Late-set runs by Trinity Christian prove costly for Campbellsville in quad-meet finale

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Passing came back to haunt the Tigers on Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Campbellsville Quad Meet at Powell Athletic Center. After leading 2-1 in the match, Campbellsville allowed Trinity Christian College to come from behind and win in five sets, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 8-25 and 15-17.

In the two sets Campbellsville (8-17) won, the Tigers hit .323 and .364, respectively but could not overcome poor passing or slow down the Trolls' offensive attack.

Trinity Christian (8-10) used the defense to dominate the net, recording 23 blocks compared to just 11 for Campbellsville. Jonathan Poortinga didn't have a great day offensively but finished with eight blocks to lead both teams.

TCC's Nick Costa led all hitters with 17 kills and was two digs away a double-double with eight. Campbellsville's Bryce Johnson and Adam Conklin both finished with 16 kills a piece, but also combined for 15 of the 29 CU attacking errors. Conklin was able to record his second-straight double-double with the 16 kills and 11 digs.

Philip Turia led CU's passing attack with 37 assists and recorded a double-double with 13 digs. Noel Camello led the Tigers with 19 digs.

Trinity Christian, which was playing its second match of the day, came out a little sluggish in the first set and the Tigers took advantage with a 25-18 win. In that first set, CU was able to force 13 sideouts out of 19 opportunities to lead 1-0 in the match.

But it was Trinity Christian which rallied late in the second set. Campbellsville led 22-20 and looked to take a 2-0 match lead but the Trolls went on a 5-2 run, aided by three CU attacking errors. The Tigers hit just .121 in the second set.

The third and fourth set was a total 180 degrees. Campbellsville dominated the third by hitting a team-high .364 and Trinity Christian was in the negatives at -.062. But the fourth was the exact opposite. The Trolls hit a match-high .538 with 14 kills and did not record an attacking error. Campbellsville hit a match-low .067 to send the match into a fifth set.

In the final set, the Tigers looked as if they would run away with it, leading 11-7. CU had match-point at 14-13 before Danny Lawrence and Poortinga put down consecutive kills. After a CU timeout, the Tigers were only able to score another point off a Poortinga error.

Keaton Marshall checked in and fell victim to a service error and Rafael Cruz's swing went long, sealing a 10-4 run for the Trolls to win 17-15.

The five-set loss is just the third for CU all season, while the Tigers have won two.

Campbellsville is now scheduled to travel to Lake Wales, Fla. for a tri-match with Warner University, St. Ambrose and Bryan College on March 17-18.
