PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Hunter Christiansen led off the 13
th inning with a double and came around to score on a
Matthew Valdez two-base knock to defeat University of Pikeville and win the series, 5-4, on Friday afternoon.
Malik Evans (2-2) earned the win on the hill for CU, tossing 4.1 innings of three-hit ball and did not allow a run. Pikeville's (14-10, 1-5 MSC) A.J Carkner (0-4) picked up the loss in the second-straight extra innings game of the series.
Campbellsville's (15-10, 4-2 MSC)
Nick Przybylek once again delivered a gem on the mound, tossing eight innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, while striking out seven. Christensen picked up two outs in the ninth inning but a walk and single made head coach
Beauford Sanders go to the bullpen.
Evans replaced Christensen and allowed the game-tying single to Anthony Roberts.
Bryce Carden started for UPIKE, and last 6.1 innings and allowed four of the five CU runs – but only two were earned. He was replaced by Max Hall, who went three innings and allowed three hits, before Carker tossed the final 3.2 innings.
Clay Valenzeula-Reece led CU with three hits and was followed with two from Valdez and
Carlos Garmendia.
Campbellsville once again got on the board early with a single run in the second inning.
Romello Carbuccia walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a
Carlos Garmendia double to left field.
CU took advantage of a hit by pitch and error to add another run in the fourth. Pinch runner Andrew DeLeon came around to score on a Christensen fielder's choice.
UPIKE answered in the bottom half with three runs to lead 3-2. A leadoff walk to Roberts and pair of singles by Jorge Perez and Matt Peterson loaded the bases. Luke Hartlage singled and Kase Mattingly picked up an RBI ground out. Brandon Sewell scored the Bears' three run with a suicide squeeze.
The lead didn't last long for the Bears, as Campbellsville regained tied it up, 3-3, in the fifth. A lead off hit by pitch to Valdez came around to score on the second error by Pikeville.
The Tigers took another lead, 4-3, in the seventh.
David Montoya walked and ended up coming around to score on a Reynoso sacrifice fly.
CU had a chance in the ninth to plate insurance runs but could not take advantage of two consecutive singles. After UPIKE tied it in in the bottom half of the ninth, CU also could not take advantage of another leadoff hit by pitch.
The extra inning win is the second-straight for CU in as many games this season. The Tigers will now travel to Versailles, Ky. to face Midway University on Tuesday, March 21 at 3 p.m.
The attached box score is incorrect. Evans (CU) did not hit, Przybylek pitched eight complete innings, Christiensen pitched 0.2 innings, Evans pitched 4.1 innings. Changes will be made on Saturday.
