VERSAILLES, Ky. —
David Montoya hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the fourth inning and the Tigers ran away from Midway University in a mid-week tilt at Chandler Field, 10-5.
In a game that saw 12 combined pitchers for both squads, the Tigers (16-10) were able to muster three crooked-run innings to down Midway (12-13).
Dexter Cline (2-1) was deserving of the win, pitching three innings of relief and allowing only one hit and striking out three. Connor Lindsay (0-2), who came on in relief of Anibal Salado allowed three runs on six hits in 2.2 innings to earn the loss.
Brett Hamilton led the Tigers at the plate with three hits and three RBI. Hamilton delivered an RBI single in the first inning to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, doubled in the second to put CU ahead 4-1, and earned an RBI single in the ninth inning to give the Tigers insurance runs.
Matthew Valdez and
Clay Valenzuela-Reece both recorded multi-hit games and drove in three combined runs, while Valdez scored twice.
Nick Johnston started on the hill for CU and went two innings, allowed three hits and one earned run – one of the two Hector Quinones home runs.
Ray Fernandez entered the third inning and was hit hard with three earned runs, before
Hunter Christensen ended the Midway four-run third inning.
Dillon Day started the performance of six-straight shutout innings by the bullpen. He allowed a hit and a walk in the fourth inning before Cline pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh.
Jared Welander and
DJ Wilson both pitched brilliantly in in the eighth and ninth to shut the Eagles down.
After the RBI single by Hamilton in the first, the Tigers put up a four-spot in the second.
Shane Stober delivered an RBI single to score
Romello Carbuccia and Valdez followed with a single scoring
Carlos Garmendia. Valenzuela-Reece then singled through the four-hole to plate pinch-runner Andrew DeLeon before Hamilton doubled in another run.
After Midway knotted the game at five with the four-run third inning, the Tigers scored a pair in the second off a two-run bomb by
David Montoya – his second of the season.
CU added on in the fifth, as a leadoff walk to Hamilton scored on a sacrifice fly by Garmendia. The Tigers plated insurance runs in the ninth with the rally started by pinch hitter
Kirby Broadbent. After a one-out single, Montoya re-entered and Valdez doubled to put runners on second and third. He was followed with a Valenzuela-Reece sacrifice fly and Hamilton RBI single.
Barrett Croslin led the Eagles with three hits, while Quinones went 2-for-5 with the two home runs and three RBI.
