CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville scratched out two runs in the fourth inning and that's all the Tigers would need today in defeating Brescia, 6-1.
Both teams used a combined 10 pitchers with Campbellsville's five throwing a seven-hitter. The Tigers clubbed 12 hits with both teams committing three errors apiece.
Kirby Broadbent (2-0) picked up the win with two innings of shutout ball. He struck out five of the six batters he faced. Also seeing action for CU, were: Nick Johnson,
Dillon Day,
Dexter Cline and
Ray Fernandez.
Campbellsville (8-5) got on the board first in the bottom of the second when
Romello Carbuccia struck out, but reached on a dropped third strike.
Riley Joyce reached on an error at first base. After
Matthew Valdez singled to center, Zach Johnson's fly ball to right scored the game's first run.
The Tigers would strike again in the fourth. Joyce doubled in Carbuccia who was on for his second straight appearance, and then Andrew DeLeon, pinch running for Joyce, scored on
Brett Hamilton's single.
After the Bearcats (0-5) scored a run in the sixth when Reed Rounder's single scored Alex Flock.
CU turned right around and put two more on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Two-out singles by
Marlor Villafana and
David Montoya produced the scores. Villafana stole second and scored on Montoya's safety and Montoya scored on a wild throw to third by Brescia catcher Tyler Cunningham.
Campbellsville closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh when Valenzuela-Reece stole home.
The Tigers and Bearcats each left 10 runners stranded.
Montoya, Carbuccia and Valenzuela-Reece combined for six of the Tigers' 12 hits.
Campbellsville plays a doubleheader against Culver-Stockton College on Saturday, March 4 with games starting at noon and 3:00.
