Scantland fires two-under in final round, Lady Tigers jump three places to finish runner-up

LONDON, Ky. — Lady Tiger golf improved 21 strokes from Monday's first round to jump three places and finish second in the Mid-South Conference Spring Tournament at Crooked Creek Golf Community.

Two-time MSC Golfer of the Year Cassidy Scantland and 2016 NAIA Champion Kaitlyn Riley have battled it out on the course the past three years but Riley got the best of Scantland this week, carding 76-73 and finishing with a total of 149 to claim medalist honors. Scantland went 79-71 and finished one stroke behind to claim runner-up.

Host University of the Cumberlands won the spring tournament with team scores of 319-319 for the two days. Campbellsville jumped Cumberland University and Lindsey Wilson with 333-312 (645) to place second.

Scantland fired the low-round of the day with a two-under 71 and hovered around even and under par the entire day. Starting on the back-nine, Scantland birdied two of the first three holes and took advantage of the par-five 17th to earn a third birdie in her first nine, going out in 36. Coming back in, Scantland was just as impressive. She birdied nine of the five holes but also fell victim to four bogeys.

Fellow senior Anna-Marie Hyatt was finished tied for sixth with sophomore teammate Michaela Jarman with match 162s. Hyatt fired 83-79 in the two rounds, while Jarman went 84-78.

Kylie Withrow and Ashley Goodin struggled in the two rounds with 87-84 and 87-85, respectively, to finish tied for 15th and 17th.

Individually, Kayla Rodgers finished in solo 26th after shooting 88-92 (180). Sarah Dickens was on the card to compete but was unable to after being under the weather with a sickness all week.

The Patriots won both of the regular season tournaments to finish atop the conference standings and win the MSC Regular Season title. Cumberlands finished with a 23-over par 599 at the fall tournament in Mount Juliet, Tenn. in September.

At the spring tournament in London, Ky., the Patriots posted a team score of 54-over par 638 to complete the sweep of the regular season events. The lowest round Cumberlands shot was during the second round of the fall tournament after it recorded a 6-over par 294 – which was the lowest score in the conference this season.

Since 2000, this is the 10th time Cumberlands has won the regular season championship.

The 2017 Mid-South Conference Women's Golf Championship is slated for April 23-26 in Bowling Green, Ky., at the Bowling Green Country Club.

Cumberland University was one stroke behind the Lady Tigers at 319-327 (646) and Lindsey Wilson fell off the pace with 324-330 (654) to place fourth. Union College's Alexis Gibson did not compete this week and the Bulldogs were forced to total only three scores. Georgetown placed fifth (380-354, 735); Pikeville was sixth (373-373, 746); and Shawnee State was seventh (471-468, 939).

The Lady Tigers Tigers will now travel to Silvis, Ill. for the William Penn University Invitational at TPC Deere Run on Tuesday-Wednesday, March 28-29.
