Miracle claims third University National title, Lady Tiger duo heads to World Team Trials in April

OKLAHOMA CITY — For the third straight year, Campbellsville's Kayla Miracle won the 60kg/132 lbs. weight class at the Women's University Nationals over the weekend.
 
Miracle, a two-time Junior World bronze medalist, led the way for seven other Lady Tigers competing this weekend. She met teammate Koral Sugiyama in the final, winning by 10-0 technical fall.

Sugiyama placed second at 60kg, while teammates Erica Sotelo placed sixth in the same weight class.

Top-seeded Miracle received a bye in the first round before winning three straight matches to claim the title. She defeated Cheyenne Bates of Wayland Baptist by 10-0 tech fall to move into a matchup with Sunkist Kids teammate Arian Carpio in the semifinal. Miracle got the best of Carpio with a 4-0 decision before facing Sugiyama in the final.

Both Sugiyama and Miracle earned a spot at the U.S. Women's World Team Trials in Las Vegas, Nev., April 28-29.

Sugiyama rallied her way to the final and it started with a 10 second pin over Asia Igafo from Wayland Baptist in the opening round. Sugiayama then earned a pair of tech falls to defeat Crystal Zamarripa from Missouri Baptist and Chloe Spencer from Choker WC.

Sotelo won her first match but fell to Carpio via 9-0 decision in the second round. She then won two matches in the consolation bracket before falling to Spencer for a chance at third place. Elissa Douglass got the best of Sotelo in the fifth-place match, winning 11-2.  

In addition, Mariah Harris placed third at 75kg/165 lbs. and Steffanie Hampton competed well to finish fifth at 63kg/ 138 lbs.

Harris had to battle her way through the consolation bracket after falling in the first round to top-seeded and eventual champion Julia Salata. Harris won two matches by tech fall before pinning Nahiela Magee in 4:20.

Hampton had five matches as well just like Sotelo. She lost in the first round to Skylar Grote via an 8-1 decision. Hampton then won two matches in the consolation bracket – one of those an close 2-1 decision over Desiree Zavala. In the fifth-place match, Hampton won via forfeit over Teshya Alo from Titan Mercury.

Charlotte Fowler competed at 53kg/116 lbs. and won her first-round match over Angelika Stephens, 9-1. Fowler was pushed to the consolation bracket with a 12-1 tech fall loss by Cassidy Jasperson. After a 10-0 tech fall over Hilda Gracia, Fowler lost to fifth-place finisher, Vanessa Ramirez.

Morgan Becker competed at 69kg/152 lbs. and Sophia Carson wrestled at 63kg/138 lbs. but both lost their two matches. After receiving a bye in the championship bracket, Becker took on top-seeded Niauni Hill from Lindenwood-Belleville and lost via 10-0 tech fall sending her to the consolation bracket. Kerlie Richemond then defeated Becker with another 10-0 tech fall to end her weekend.

Carson earned a bye in the championship bracket but lost to Teshya Alo (10-0) and Ismileyna Valles (6-5) in her two matches.
