Fourth-inning balk and wild pitch dooms Tiger baseball in 3-2 defeat to Indiana University Southeast

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Indiana University Southeast scored the tying and winning runs in the fourth inning off a balk and wild pitch to upend Campbellsville on Thursday, 3-2.

In a low-scoring affair, runs came in short order and the pitching staffs on both sides were solid for the most part outside of two innings. Also, it was the defense that hurt the Tigers (18-12, 6-3 MSC) in the two run-scoring innings for the Grenadiers.

Both teams traded runs in the second inning. Cody Maloon singled for IUS and the Grenadiers attempted two sacrifice bunts that reached to load the bases on miscommunications by the CU defense. Zach Reboulet singled for IUS to take its first lead, 1-0.

CU answered in the bottom half, as Carlos Garmendia singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then got caught in a run-down between second and third but an error by Grenadier starter Jordan Thompson allowed him to advance. Kirby Broadbent delivered an RBI ground ball to knot the game at one.

The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the third and played small ball themselves. Clay Valenzuela-Reece laid a bunt down the third base line to start the rally and took advantage of a wild pitch and passed ball to advance just 90-feet away. Brett Hamilton drove him in with an RBI single to right, 2-1.

Indiana University Southeast (19-7, 9-3) then took advantage in the fourth. Ray Fernandez (0-2), who relieved Clayton Carrico for the third and fourth innings, allowed a two-out single and a pair of walks to load the bases. Fernandez balked in the tying run and a wild pitch scored what ended up being the winning run.

It was "Johnny All-Staff" on the mound for both clubs today, as CU tossed out four mid-week arms and IUS used six.

Carrico started on the mound for CU, allowing one run on three hits. Fernandez went the two innings as well, allowing two hits, two earned runs and a pair of walks. Nick Johnston shutdown the Grenadiers in the middle innings, allowing two hits through four frames of work. Dexter Cline worked around a walk in the ninth to keep the deficit at one.

Thompson pitched three innings for IUS, allowing four hits and two runs – one earned. He gave way to Alex Schoettmer (2-1) who earned the victory and shut down CU in the middle innings.

Both teams had opportunities to scratch a few runs but the pitching staff and defense made plays down the stretch to strand a combined 17 runners throughout the day. In the fifth, Valenzuela-Reece doubled with one out and was moved to third but was unable to score.

In the seventh, Richard Rodriguez led off the inning with a double but Johnston got out of the threat unscathed. CU had a chance in the bottom half but Montoya's double missed from being a game-tying homerun by only a few inches – doubles off the top of the left field fence. But CU stranded him as well.

Gabe Rogers pitched the ninth inning for IUS and set the Tigers down 1-2-3 to earn his sixth save of the season.

Campbellsville will now travel 17 miles southeast to Columbia, Ky. for a Mid-South Conference series with Lindsey Wilson College this weekend. The series has been moved to Saturday-Sunday, April 1-2.
