Rallies fall short in doubleheader sweep by Lindsey Wilson on Saturday evening

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Tiger baseball was unable to come from behind in game one and errors proved costly in game two as Lindsey Wilson swept Campbellsville in the doubleheader on Saturday at Egnew Park.

The Blue Raiders (21-15, 8-1 MSC) scored three runs in the first inning and CU (18-14, 6-5 MSC) was unable to rally late in a 6-5 loss. In game two, a pair of errors in the third inning allowed Lindsey Wilson to score the game-tying run and the Blue Raiders plated the winning run in the sixth, defeating CU 2-1.

Game one: Lindsey Wilson 6, Campbellsville 5

Nick Przybylek and James Doubet both finished with well over 100 pitches (128 and 122, respectively), but Doubet received support from Steve Colella in the ninth to shut the door.

Przybylek (3-3) pitched a complete-game but allowed 13 hits and six earned runs. Romello Carbuccia went 3-for-4 and scored a run while Brett Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Blue Raiders scored three runs in the opening inning and added another in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Tigers cut the lead in half with a pair of solo home runs by Matt Valdez and Brett Hamilton but Lindsey Wilson answered with its final two runs in the bottom half.

The Tigers scored another in the fifth to cut the lead in half again, 6-3, as Jose Castro started the rally with a two-out single. Castro stole second and ended up scoring on a David Montoya RBI single.

Lindsey Wilson had multiple opportunities to score but Przybylek stranded 10 Blue Raiders on the base paths.

CU rallied in the ninth and scored a pair of runs but could have been three after Hamilton singled with two outs but was out trying to stretch his hit into a double.

Carbuccia singled and was followed with a Carlos Garmendia walk and both came around to cut the LWC lead to one after a Marlor Villafana double. Doubet was replaced by Colella for the final out, as he struck out Shane Stober.

Game two: Lindsey Wilson 2, Campbellsville 1

In a low-scoring affair in game two, Indalecio Romo was the tough-luck loser, tossing a gem of 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run.

CU took a 1-0 lead in the third after Jose Castro tripled and scored on a David Montoya single up the middle.

But the defense fell asleep in the bottom half allowing the Blue Raiders to tie the game. Mauricio Guedarrama singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Spencer Wise. Steven Paredes then singled up the middle and the wheels fell off for CU, as Castro over threw Romo on the mound to allow the tying-run to score.

Ricky Winfield shut the Tigers down from that point on, going 1-2-3 in each of the next three innings.

Lindsey Wilson took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, after a leadoff hit by pitch came around to score on an RBI single by Antonio Dorado off reliever DJ Wilson.

In the seventh, Hamilton led off the inning with a double but the Tigers fell victim to a pair of hard-hit balls that were right at the Lindsey Wilson defense. With two outs, Garmendia walked and Lindsey Wilson head coach Jonathan Burton decided once again to go to his closer, Steve Colella.

Like game one, the Tigers had the game-tying run at second base with two outs and Colella entered. But the senior closer got the best of Shane Stober once again to end the rally.

Game three of the series is scheduled to start on Sunday, April 2 at 2 p.m. ET at Egnew Park.
