CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — With inclement weather on the way, Campbellsville University baseball has decided to move the upcoming weekend series with Cumberland University to Thursday and Friday.
Instead of the normal Friday-Saturday three-game series, the Tigers and Phoenix will meet for a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon and a single-game on Friday. First pitch both days is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET at HIG Field.
Fans can tune in to each game with live video and play-by-play on the Campbellsville University Sports Network.
Campbellsville (9-8) vs. Cumberland (11-10)
After starting the season ranked No. 14 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Tigers fell out of the first regular season edition, which was announced on Tuesday, March 7. Campbellsville started the season by winning eight of its 10 games but has since lost six of the last seven.
Cumberland University has also been up-and-down to start the year. The Phoenix lost four of their first five games before winning six of the next seven. In the last nine games, Cumberland boasts a 4-5 record.
This weekend opens Mid-South Conference play and Campbellsville is looking to three-peat after claiming the regular season crown in 2015 and 2016. In addition, the Tigers won the 2016 MSC Tournament for the eighth time in program history.
Clay Valenzuela-Reece leads the Tigers with a .386 batting average and is tied with
Logan Roberts with the team-lead in home runs (2).
Diego Reynoso (.386),
Matthew Valdez (.333) and
David Montoya (.302) have all started the year seeing the ball well but overall as a team, the Tigers are hitting .286 with 111 strikeouts and only 41 walks.
On the mound,
Nick Przybylek was robbed over a gem last weekend vs. Culver-Stockton, pitching six scoreless innings before the Wildcats erupted with four in the seventh. Przybylek, a 10-game winner last year, boasts a 4.22 ERA and a 2-2 record. In addition,
Malik Evans has four starts but was roughed up in his previous start, allowing five runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work. The game three started has been up in the air thus far for CU, as
Jhonbert Gonzalez,
Dexter Cline and
DJ Wilson have all seen weekend starts. As a team, CU's staff carries in an ERA of 4.18 going into the conference weekend with Cumberland.
But the Phoenix pitching staff has also struggled to start the year bringing in a 5.46 ERA. Led by Travis Dohr's 4-0 record and three complete games, the Phoenix are also looking for weekend starters past their ace. Curtis Hoppe and Mitch Langer have both started in five games but both have an ERA above 4.6.
At the plate, Austin Krajnak leads the Phoenix with a .361 average and seven home runs. The seven long balls ranks him No. 1 in the conference and seventh nationally.
