Przybylek's gem, Joyce's suicide squeeze delivers DH sweep over Cumberland University

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A pair of pitcher duels turned into Campbellsville's first two Mid-South Conference victories of the season, as the Tigers defeated Cumberland University on Thursday afternoon, 7-3 and 1-0.

Nick Przybylek shined in game one, allowing three unearned runs through 6.1 innings and striking out six. Campbellsville (11-8, 2-0 MSC) scored four runs in the first inning of game one and that was all CU needed to upend Cumberland (11-12, 0-2 MSC).

In game two, it was Logan Roberts and Curtis Hoppe dueling it out on the mound but Riley Joyce delivered a walk-off suicide squeeze to win Campbellsville's third one-run game of the season.

Campbellsville and Cumberland are scheduled to meet on Friday afternoon for the final contest of the three-game series at HIG Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.

Game one: Campbellsville 7, Cumberland 3

Campbellsville put up a four-spot in the first inning, as David Montoya led off with a double and was followed with a hit by pitch to Romello Carbuccia and a drag bunt hit by Clay Valenzuela-Reece to load the bases. Brett Hamilton and Diego Reynoso both drove in runs with consecutive sacrifice flies before CU scored a pair of two-out runs as well – an RBI single by Matthew Valdez and RBI double by Carlos Garmendia.

CU chased ace Travis Dohr (4-1) after only one inning for his shortest stint of the season and his first loss. Mitch Langer replaced Dohr and pitched well throughout the final seven innings, allowing two earned runs.

The Tigers added those two more runs in the fourth as Montoya reached on an dropped fly ball and was squeezed in by Valenzuela-Reece. Carbuccia also scored on an RBI by Reynoso.

Leading 6-0, Przybylek (3-2) had all he needed but the Tigers defense faltered in the seventh inning. Cumberland's Jordan Hunt reached on error by Garmendia at third base and then the Phoenix loaded the bases with a single and walk at the bottom of their order. Cumberland scored on another E5 by Garmendia and Przybylek used one of his six Ks to sit down Nick Mira with the bases loaded.

Jared Welander replaced Przybylek on the hill and Austin Kraynak delivered a two-RBI single to cut Campbellsville's lead in half, 6-3. Welander then picked up a strikeout and ground ball to end the Cumberland threat.

Carbuccia gave Campbellsville some insurance in the eighth with a solo home run that just snuck in the fair pole down the left field line.

Game two: Campbellsville 1, Cumberland 0

In game two, it was Logan Roberts vs. Curtis Hoppe, as the two combined to allow just seven hits and struck out 10.

In his first start of the season, Roberts went 5.1 innings before giving way to DJ Wilson (2-1) for the final 1.2 innings. Wilson went straight through the Phoenix lineup, without allowing a hit and sitting down all five batters he faced.

The first base runner of the game, Steven Hollis, reached on a two-out walk in the third but Roberts struck out Hector Morales to end the inning. Campbellsville's first base runner also came in the third, off a Janson Neff's bobble, but Marlor Villafana grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end CU's threat.

Roberts worked around another Cumberland scoring opportunity after walking a pair of batters but Kevin Connolly ended the fourth with a pop out to Montoya at second base.

Cumberland had yet another opportunity to score in the sixth after a single and intentional walk put runners on first and second with one out. Rayden Sierra, who struck out four times in game one, delivered a single to load the bases, but Austin Voeller grounded into a fielder's choice and Reynoso gunned down Morales at the plate for the go-ahead run.

Connolly once again had a chance to break a scoreless tie but Valdez made a spectacular play up the middle at shortstop to steal a base knock away and end the inning.

After both teams went down 1-2-3 in the next full inning, fireworks happened with one out for the Tigers. Reynoso was hit by a pitch and was lifted for a pinch runner in Andrew DeLeon. He was followed with the third error of the game for Cumberland to allow Valdez to reach and Garmendia walked to loaded the bases.

On a 2-1 count, Joyce and DeLeon executed a beautiful suicide squeeze to score the game-winner.
