Pitching overcomes defensive struggles, as Tigers salvage game three at Lindsey Wilson, 10-6

COLUMBIA, Ky. — In a game that saw seven combined errors for both squads, Campbellsville scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to break the game open and salvage one game in the Mid-South Conference series with Lindsey Wilson, 10-6.

After falling in games one and two on Saturday afternoon, the Tigers (19-14, 7-5 MSC) were able to scratch crooked number innings in the first, fourth and ninth innings today.

Offensively, Carlos Garmendia, Romello Carbuccia and David Montoya all had two-hit days, while Garmendia and Matt Valdez drove in two runs a piece. One of Garmendia's RBI came from his second home run in the second inning.

Malik Evans started on the hill and only lasted 2 2/3 innings but Jared Welander (2-2) was phenomenal in 5 1/3 innings of work, allowing only two hits and one run, while striking out five in relief.

Lindsey Wilson (21-16, 7-2 MSC) scored a run in the first and three in the third to take a brief 4-3 lead. The Tigers answered right back, though, and brought home three runs in the fourth and it all started with one of the Lindsey Wilson four errors.

Brett Hamilton reached and stole second, while Carbuccia singled to put runners on the corners. Marlor Villafana drove home Hamilton forcing Lindsey Wilson head coach Johnathan Burton to make a pitching change and go to Louis Corral in the pin. Corral allowed a Garmendia single to score Carbuccia and give the Tigers a 7-4 lead.

Aaron Pearcy (3-2) lasted just three innings, allowed seven hits and six runs – but only four were earned.

The next four innings were a breeze for both clubs. Welander set down 11-straight batters, while Corral set down 15-straight until the Tigers came up in the ninth.

Diego Reynoso delivered a pinch-hit single to start the rally and was followed with another Lindsey Wilson error to allow Garmendia to reach. Jose Castro was intentionally walked with one out to load the bases and set up the potential double play but Montoya singled and Valdez doubled to score three runs.

Clay Valenzuela-Reece grounded out to second with Montoya on third to score the fourth run of the inning, 10-4.

Lindsey Wilson made it interested in the ninth. After a leadoff hit by pitch to Ben Heidenman, DJ Wilson entered for Welander and allowed a pair of singles and sacrifice fly for the Blue Raiders to score twice.

Campbellsville will now travel to IU Southeast on Wednesday, April 5 in New Albany, Ind. For a 5 p.m. ET first pitch.
