Tigers ignite with 13-2 run-rule victory over rival Georgetown to kickoff Senior Weekend

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — If you would have told coach Beauford Sanders that his team would pull out a win over rival Georgetown, he could see it. But if you told Coach Sanders that his team would run-rule the opposing Tigers on Friday night at HIG Field, he would have said WOW! Campbellsville did just that on Friday night, winning 13-2 over Georgetown in game one of the Mid-South Conference series.

Campbellsville, which honored its nine seniors before first pitch, seemed to play with a little fire tonight and possibly a chip on its shoulder. CU plated seven runs in the third inning to break the game wide open but kept the pedal to the floor the rest of the way, pounding out 14 hits and the pitching staff held Georgetown to just five.

Five Tigers had multi-hit games – David Montoya, Clay Valenzuela-Reece, Brett Hamilton, Carlos Garmendia and Riley Joyce. David Montoya (4), Romello Carbuccia (3) and Garmendia (2) all drove in multiple runs, while Montoya and Carbuccia also delivered home runs.

The pitching staff shut down Georgetown as well by only allowing single runs in the second and third innings. Indalecio Romo (1-1) tossed the first six innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. Jared Welander pitched the last inning and Georgetown went down 1-2-3.

The two rivals will meet again on Sunday afternoon starting with a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. ET. Fans can follow the action on the CU Sports Network.

Georgetown took a 1-0 lead after a solo home run by Andrew Paz but CU answered in the bottom half. GC regained a 2-1 lead in the third but Campbellsville came right back again with 10 batters coming to the plate and scoring seven runs.

Carbuccia walked with the bases loaded, Garmendia delivered a two-RBI single, Diego Reynoso followed with an RBI single, Marlor Villafana earned an RBI ground out and was followed with a two-run single by Montoya for CU's seven runs.

The Tigers chased GC starter Breion Barron (4-4) after his shortest outing of the year – four innings, allowing 11 hits and nine earned runs. Steven Whisler and Logan Brown didn't fair much better in the final 2 1/3 innings.

Whisler allowed two runs in the sixth. A lead off home run led to a two-run home run by Carbuccia with two outs.

In the seventh, Hunter Christiensen delivered a pinch-hit leadoff double and was followed with a two-run round tripper by Montoya – the game winner forcing the run-rule.
