CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger baseball played its best baseball on the year with a sweep of Georgetown College this weekend. The Tigers out-scored Georgetown 22-5 overall after 13-2, 4-1 and 5-2 victories.
Campbellsville now improves its record to 22-14 overall and 10-5 inside Mid-South Conference play. The Tigers are the first team to 10 wins in the Mid-South, while University of the Cumberlands swept Lindsey Wilson today in a doubleheader on Sunday and sits at 9-3. Lindsey Wilson is second in the standings at 8-4 but holds the tiebreaker over CU for the regular season crown.
The Tigers head to University of the Cumberlands in two weeks, which could decide the regular season championship. CU, Cumberlands, Lindsey Wilson and Georgetown (25-13, 8-7 MSC) have at least sealed an opening round host bid for the MSC Tournament.
Campbellsville will get back in action on Tuesday, as Union College comes to town for a 6 p.m. ET game at HIG Field.
Today, though, it was exceptional pitching performances from
Nick Przybylek (4-3) and
DJ Wilson (4-1). Przybylek struck out a season-high 12 batters in a 135 pitch performance, while Wilson came into the last game in relief and allowed just one run over five innings.
The Tigers also out-hit Georgetown 32-15 on the weekend and made multiple defensive plays that were highlight reel material.
David Montoya led the Tigers going 6-for-11 with four runs batted in (all coming in game one) and scoring three runs himself.
Brett Hamilton also had a great senior weekend going 6-or-11 with four runs scored.
Game one: Campbellsville 4, Georgetown 1
Przybylek had a no-hitter through four innings before Ryan Viramontes broke it up in the fifth and ended up coming around to score the lone Georgetown run on an infield single by Brandon Benson. But that was all Przybylek allowed in his 135-pitch performance.
Offensively, the Tigers scratched all four runs with two outs. A leadoff single by Montoya in the first scored on an RBI hit by Hamilton. In the second, it was a two-out walk by
Diego Reynoso coming around to score on a single by
Riley Joyce.
The Tigers plated two more in the sixth inning. Consecutive singles by Hamilton and
Romello Carbuccia came around to score on a sac fly by
Carlos Garmendia and RBI hit by Reynoso.
Game two: Campbellsville 5, Georgetown 2
Reigning MSC Pitcher of the Week,
Jared Welander, started on the hill but was unable to to find the zone walking four batters and hitting another – which led to a run in the first inning and was the only lead for GC all weekend.
But CU's offense came right back and didn't let that lead last. Montoya and Hamilton came through again with singles and both scored to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.
CU plated three runs in the fifth and Hamilton was once again in the mix.
Matthew Valdez led off the inning with a single and was moved by
Clay Valenzuela-Reece on a sac bunt. Hamilton delivered an infield single before Carbuccia delivered an RBI hit and was followed with another RBI single by
Hunter Christensen.
Wilson entered in the third inning and shut Georgetown down until the sixth. Georgetown had the tying run at the plate in the sixth but he worked out of the jam as Kendall King grounded out to Montoya.
In the seventh, Wilson allowed a leadoff single by struck out John Shattles to seal the sweep.
