OKLAHOMA, City —
Romello Carbuccia's clutch single in the top of the ninth sent Campbellsville to the winner's bracket final at the Oklahoma City Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round, defeating Mayville State 3-2 in thrilling fashion.
Trailing 2-1 with one out in their last at-bat, the Tigers used a double by
Brett Hamilton that the left fielder lost in the sun and a
Carlos Garmendia single to put runners on the corners. That's when when Carbuccia sent a soft fly to center that found a safe spot between three Mayville fielders. Hamilton scored easily and
Jose Castro, pinch running for Garmendia, legged it home when a relay throw went into Campbellsville's dugout.
Kirby Broadbent (4-0), who pitched to two batters, picked up the win.
Starter
Indalecio Romo did not have had his best stuff, but danced around trouble in four of the 7 1/3 innings that he pitched. He gave up eight hits, walked four and struck out five.
Romo walked two batters in the eighth and Mayville's Taylor Lawrence, who was pinch hitting for Zachary Swegarden, made him pay with a double off the left-centerfield fence to give Mayville its 2-1 lead.
CU (34-19) went ahead 1-0 in the fifth when
David Montoya was hit by a pitch, took second on a passed ball and scored on
Diego Reynoso's single.
Mayville's Kody Rock had a four-hitter going in to the ninth and the hits by Hamilton and Garmendia chased him for reliever Jacob Torgerson. Torgerson pitched to only one batter, Carbuccia.
Matthew Valdez was 1-for-4, Hamilton 2-for-4, Garmendia 1-for-4, Carbuccia 2-for-4 and
Diego Reynoso 1-for-3 for the seven Tiger hits.
Mayville (46-11) had nine hits, led by Nathan Walsh's 2-for-4 day.
