Oklahoma City spoils Campbellsville's upset bid with six-run rally in the 10th inning to win 17-16

OKLAHOMA, City — Jared Baker's 10th inning walk-off double spoiled Campbellsville's run in the NAIA's Oklahoma City Bracket as the Stars came from five runs down to pin a heartbreaking 17-16 loss on the Tigers.

In a game that had more story twists than a series from The Bachelor, Campbellsville (35-21) rallied from an 11-5 deficit in the fifth inning and finally tied the game at 11-all in the eighth.

Then in overtime, CU put itself in a position to force an "if-necessary" game by scoring five runs in the top of the 10th and took a 16-11 lead.

But that's when things started to unwind for the Tigers.

The Stars  (48-8) scored their six runs on only two hits, reaching Campbellsville pitching for four walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch. Campbellsville needed but one out to close out the win, but they couldn't get it.

OCU had a four-run fourth where they needed only three hits, the last one a sky-high ball that got lost in the sun and fell right behind the third base bag.

But the fact that the Tigers were in the game with an opportunity to win is testament to their will. They took just about everything the Stars threw at them, taking the No. 1 team in the nation to 10 exciting innings.

The big bugaboo for CU was the extra outs they gave Oklahoma City. Campbellsville walked 12 Stars and hit five others with a pitch. CU stranded nine runners and OCU 12.

Nine total pitchers were used in the game with only one working four innings.

CU traded runs with the Stars through the first three innings. The score was tied at 1-1 and 4-4.

Carlos Garmendia hit a solo homer in the second and hit a two-run shot in the third.

Oklahoma City went up 8-4 in the fourth and tacked on three more runs in the fifth.

Well-rested pitcher Ray Hernandez came in in the seventh and pitched two 1-2-3 innings before getting in trouble in the 10th when he issued back-to-back walks.

His teammates had spotted him a 16-11 lead after a big top half of the inning. Matthew Valdez led the inning off with a single. Back-to-back walks to Romello Carbuccia and Garmendia led to two-run single by Brett Hamilton and a three-run homer by David Montoya.

Valdez was 2-for-4 and scored four times, Clay Valenzuela-Reece was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Garmendia was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBIs. Hamilton and Diego Reynoso had two-hit games, Hamilton with four RBIs and Reynoso with two.
