CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger volleyball outscored Bethel University tonight 75-30 and swept the Wildcats to open the 2017 season, 25-8, 25-11 and 25-11.
Campbellsville's (1-0) height at the front row and solid defense put this match out of hand early and the Lady Tigers didn't let up.
Annija Abolina led CU with nine kills, while
Katie Johnson had eight and
Julia Fonseca and
Maria Coelho had six each. Those four Lady Tigers out-hit Bethel (0-1) by themselves, as the Wildcats finished with only 13 kills all night.
With six players standing over 6-foot, CU dominated the front row early. Fonseca and Abolina both had a trio of blocks, while
Olivia Jarvis has two and three others had one.
CU started on fire and never let up, taking a 10-3 lead early forcing a Bethel timeout. Out of the break, the Lady Tigers out-scored the Wildcats 15-5 led by five of Abolina's nine kills. Bethel struggled with its offensive attack by hitting -.107 and was unable to get in positive numbers all night.
The Wildcats hit -.107, -.095 and -.200 in the three sets, compared to Campbellsville's .367, .321 and .300.
Campbellsville kept the pedal to floor and coach
Amy Zink was able to play her entire lineup, allowing multiple freshmen and transfers get their first taste of Lady Tiger volleyball.
Maliyah Tela led the passing attack with 28 assists, while
Olivia Jarvis finished with three kills in four attacks. In addition, Katie Harris dished out three assists in the final set and
Baylee Jensen finished with one kill in her debut.
Marcella Compeau, who is coming off injury, finished with five digs, while
Savannah Moss led CU's defensive attack with 10 digs.
With the victory, the Lady Tigers start 1-0 for the first time since 2013.
CU will now hit the road and travel to Indiana University Southeast on Monday, Aug. 28. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET in New Albany, Ind.
