NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Campbellsville women's volleyball team moved to 2-0 on the season after sweeping Indiana University Southeast on the road Tuesday night in New Albany, Ind.
Annija Abolina led the Lady Tigers (2-0) with 14 kills in the match, while
Maliyah Tela recorded 35 assists against the Grenadiers (0-5).
Savannah Moss and
Marcella Compeau led Campbellsville with 15 digs apiece, while
Katie Johnson notched 11 digs in the match.
Both teams traded points to start the match, but the Lady Tigers used a 6-1 run in the early portion of the opening set to turn a 5-5 tie into an 11-6 advantage. Indiana Southeast chipped away its deficit to pull within one point at 15-14. The Lady Tigers then went on another 6-1 run to push its lead to 21-15.
Campbellsville won the first set, 25-18, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Lady Tigers largest lead of the set came at seven points to close the first set.
Campbellsville got off to another strong start in the second set scoring the first three points in the set. However, the Grenadiers stormed back and grabbed a narrow 7-6 edge. After falling behind, the Lady Tigers countered with an 8-1 run to regain the lead, 14-8. Campbellsville continued to control the second set as it rattled off the final five points to win the set, 25-14.
With a 2-0 lead the match, Campbellsville went on an 8-2 run to start the second set, but Indiana Southeast continued to work its way back into the set and tied the match at 14. Despite tying the match, the only lead the Grenadiers had in the third set was 1-0.
Neither team could string together a long run late in the set as the largest lead over the final 20 rallies of the match was four points. The Grenadiers tried to comeback and force a fourth set, but Campbellsville shut the door and won the final set, 25-23, to secure the match, 3-0.
In the match, the Lady Tigers largest lead was 11 points to end the second set, while Indiana Southeast only had a one-point lead in each set.
After hitting .333 and .455 in the first and second set, respectively, Campbellsville struggled in the final set hitting .085. For the second-straight match, the Lady Tigers held the opposition to a negative hitting percentage after the Grenadiers hits -.049 for the match.
Campbellsville compiled 38 kills, while Indiana Southeast recorded just 17 kills in the match. The Grenadiers had more errors (22) than kills in the match.
Next up, the Lady Tigers compete at the NAIA Southeastern Challenge at Lindsey Wilson College on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Campbellsville plays University of Mobile and Martin Methodist College at 3 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. ET, respectively.
The Saturday slate features the Lady Tigers taking on Webber International University and College of Coastal Georgia at 11 a.m. ET and 3 p.m. ET.
