DEERFIELD, Ill. – The 16th-ranked Campbellsville men's soccer team started its 2017 season with a 2-0 win on the road over Trinity International University on Saturday afternoon in Deerfield, Ill.
Ignacio Mangada scored the two Tiger (1-0) goals in its victory on Saturday.
Mark Callaghan and
Rickard Hallin each chipped in with an assist in the contest.
Campbellsville started the game on the front foot offensively, but the Trojan (0-3) goalkeeper made a couple stops and the Tigers missed the target, as the game remained scoreless. Trinity International started to turn the play with a couple scoring chances of its own. However,
Andreas Nota made a key stop off of a corner kick to keep the game knotted at zero.
In the 27th minute, Campbellsville finally broke the scoreless tie. Callaghan raced toward the near post off the right wing and chipped the ball back toward the center of goal where Mangada has wide open to head the ball into the back of the net and but the Tigers ahead, 1-0.
Campbellsville continued to put pressure on the Trojan defense, but the Tigers were unable increase their lead in the first half. Trinity International had a golden opportunity to tie the game a one, but Francesco De Felice sent the ball over the crossbar.
With Campbellsville leading 1-0 to start the second half, both the Tigers and the Trojans generated early scoring chances off of defensive miscues, but both goalkeepers stood up to the task.
Mangada doubled the Campbellsville lead with his second goal of the game after he picked up a pass from Hallin and flicked it past Jared Yonke to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage in the 58th minute of the game.
Late in the second half, the Trojans generated a few more scoring chances, but Trinity International sent their attempts wide of the goal. Along with the Trojans missing the target, Nota made three saves in the second 45 minutes of play.
Neither team was able to connect on their late scoring chances as the Tigers picked a season opening win over the Trinity International, 2-0.
To finish the game, Campbellsville outshot the Trojans, 24-13, and the Tigers held a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. Yonke kept the game within reach for Trinity International with 11 saves in the game.
Campbellsville is back on the road next Saturday as it travels to Dayton, Tennessee for a top 25 matchup against No. 11 Bryan College at 7 p.m. ET.
