VALLEY, Ala. — Campbellsville put up double figure scoring in three of the four quarters and the defense picked up three interceptions at key moments throughout the game to secure the Tigers' first 2-0 start since 2011.
Campbellsville knocked off the home-standing Point University Skyhawks on Saturday afternoon, 51-33.
CU's defense picked up stops all day but none bigger than the three interceptions – two by
Marcus McCants and another by reigning Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division Player of the Week
BJ Pelt.
Campbellsville (2-0) held a 14-0 lead with 8:21 left in the first quarter and 23-6 advantage with 2:33 in the first half but Point University (1-1) used long plays and explosive kick returns by Charles Ducksworth to make a game of it.
Ducksworth was a double-edged sword in the side of the Tigers' side all day. He finished with 56 yards receiving and a touchdown but broke multiple tackles on a 90-yard kickoff return for his second TD.
After Point picked up a late score in the first half cutting the halftime advantage to 11 points, 23-12, the special teams kick-coverage faltered again for CU. Opening the second half, the Skyhawks returned the opening kick 45 yards to setup another scoring opportunity just 2:22 seconds into the third quarter.
With the score now 23-19 and Point making a game of it, the Tigers nipped the Skyhawks momentum in the bud with a pair of touchdowns in a span of 39 seconds by cousins
Kendon Young and
Keanu Young.
Kendon Young caught a 30-yard TD from
Hunter Brown to put CU ahead, 30-19. Then it was CU's defense stepping up again. McCants caught his first interception and returned it 51 yards down to the Point red zone.
Keanu Young capped off that turnover with a quick one-play score off an end-around scampering 20-yards for the first of his two rushing touchdowns.
Kendon Young finished with a career-high 96 yards and caught a pair of touchdowns – marking five total TDs on the year, which matches his total in 10 games last season. The two TD for
Keanu Young is also a career-high.
Senior
Zerric Willis stole the show from the Young cousins by hauling in three touchdowns receptions for 82 yards. The three TDs matches a career-high set in 2015 vs. Reinhardt when the Tigers sealed the MSC West Division Championship.
Even after the Tigers went ahead 37-19, Point University wasn't letting up. The Skyhawks cut the deficit to one possession but on their next drive, Pelt ended a 10-play drive for Point with an interception on the four-yard line.
The Tigers then put up back-to-back 10-play drives. After the interception, CU answered with a 96-yard drive capped off by the third touchdown for Willis – which deflected off a teammate and Willis was in the right place at the right time.
With 10:26 remaining, Campbellsville had a game-high 12-play drive that milked the clock under four minutes. McCants sealed the victory with his second interception as a shovel pass by Derek Bellard sailed.
Hunter Brown was one the front-end of all five touchdowns and 380 yards – his 10th 300-plus yard game in his career.
Campbellsville will now return home to Finley Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 9 to host Warner University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the Tiger Tailgate Show starts at 11:30 a.m.
