CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger volleyball started slow but ended tonight with all the momentum for their seventh sweep of the year, a 3-0 win over Life University (25-22, 25-20, 25-17).
The Lady Tigers (9-2, 2-2 MSC) dominated the front of the net by out-hitting, out-blocking and out-serving Life University.
After droppings its first two matches of the season against ranked opponents Georgetown College and Lindsey Wilson, the Lady Tigers came out with a little fire by hitting .260 compared to only .049 for Life. The Running Eagles, who came in as one of the best serving teams in the country, ended with six service errors and Campbellsville was able to steal all the momentum at the end of the first set.
Katie Johnson led all attackers with 11 kills, while
Julia Fonseca had eight and
Olivia Jarvis finished with seven. In addition, freshman
Whitney Perian finished with a career-high five kills.
Maliah Tela led CU's passing attack with 31 assists and
Savannah Moss led the defense with 12 digs.
Life came out on fire in the first set with a 6-2 lead and pushed that CU deficit to 10-4. But the Lady Tigers answered to knot the match at 16-all. CU took its first lead, 17-16, as Johnson earned one of her seven first-set kills.
After going back and forth until the set was tied at 22, CU stole the momentum right back with a Jarvis block and ace by
Ashlyn Flock – one of the five aces for the Lady Tigers.
In the second set, Life took a 14-11 lead but Campbellsville put an end to any momentum for the Running Eagles. The Lady Tigers ended up going on a 14-6 run to take set No. 2 and lead the match, 2-0. The set was the nail in the coffin for the Running Eagles, as CU hit a match-high .318 compared to only .065 for Life.
Life struggled with its offense, never hitting over .100 in any of the three sets.
The third set was all CU. Campbellsville led 1-0 after one of the four kills by
Maliyah Tela and Life was never able to regain any momentum.
The win started a three-game home stand for the Lady Tigers, as Shawnee State comes to town on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match and Pikeville travels to CU on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
