Women’s Volleyball picks up Mid-South Conference sweep over Shawnee State

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville women's volleyball team grabbed its second-straight Mid-South Conference victory with a 3-0 win against Shawnee State University on Saturday afternoon inside the Powell Athletic Center.
 
Maria Coelho finished with a match-high 16 kills for the Lady Tigers (10-2, 3-2 MSC) and Julia Fonseca chipped in with 10 kills and had a .474 attacking percentage in the match. Christina Shelton led the Bears (6-10, 1-3 MSC) with 11 kills and she was a dig away from a double-double.
 
Marcela Compeau recorded 18 digs in the contest to lead all players, while Katie Johnson notched 14 digs.
 
Campbellsville jumped out to an early lead on Shawnee State grabbing a 6-2 lead. Another quick 4-0 spurt helped the Lady Tigers stretch its lead to 13-5. Shawnee State was unable to string together a long run as Campbellsville took the first set, 25-15.
 
The Lady Tigers held the Bears to a -.026 attacking percentage during the first set, while hitting .233.
 
Shawnee State flipped the script in the second set and took a 7-2 edge, forcing Campbellsville to take a timeout. The Lady Tigers slowly chipped away at its deficit and used an 8-2 run to take a 10-9 lead.
 
A seesaw battle broke out in the second set where the score was tied six more times throughout the remainder of the set. The only lead the Bears took over the final 31 rallies was at 19-18 and the Lady Tigers countered with the next four points to grab a 22-19 advantage. Shawnee State erased the deficit and tied the set at 23 and then again at 24, but Campbellsville scored the final two points en route to a 26-24 victory.
 
The third set picked up where the second set left off in the back-and-forth affair. The final game saw 13 ties and six lead changes. Campbellsville's largest lead was five points – which came at the end of the contest – while Shawnee State had its largest lead of three points twice during the set.
 
After, the Bears took its second three-point lead, 10-7, a quick 4-0 run from the Lady Tigers put Campbellsville ahead, 11-10. With the scored tied at 18, the Lady Tigers closed the set 7-2 run to win the set, 25-20, and complete the sweep.
 
Campbellsville finished the contest with a .217 attacking percentage, compared to .088 from Shawnee State. The Bears held a 5-4 advantage is total team blocks on Saturday.
 
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET against University of Pikeville at home.
