BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Campbellsville women's volleyball team picked up wins over University of St. Francis and Indiana Institute of Technology on the final day of the Holiday Inn Express Classis, hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.
Maria Coelho led the Lady Tigers (14-3) with 22 kills over two matches and
Julia Fonseca chipped in with 21 kills, while
Maliyah Tela had 63 assists on the day.
Campbellsville 3, St. Francis 0
Campbellsville got its second-straight sweep of the Holiday Inn Express Classic after beating St. Francis (9-13) in straight sets. The Lady Tigers started the match on a 7-2 run and they took the the largest lead of the set at 20-10. The only lead the Fighting Saints took in the first was 1-0 and Campbellsville erased the lead quickly and never looked back.
The Lady Tigers took the opening set 25-17 after St. Francis tried to string together a late rally. Campbellsville held the Fighting Saints to a -.022 attacking percentage, but the Lady Tigers only hit .067.
In the second set, Campbellsville scored the first three points and did not relinquish the lead. The Lady Tigers led the entire second set and St. Francis could not tie the score. After Campbellsville led 3-0, the closest the Fighting Saints got was 4-3, en route to a 25-16 set victory for the Lady Tigers.
St. Francis got off to the strong start in the third set, leading by two points three different times over the first six rallies. Campbellsville countered to take a lead at 6-5 and once again never trailed for the remainder of the match. The Lady Tigers largest lead in the third set was nine points, 22-13, and won the third set, 25-16 to complete the sweep.
The Lady Tigers finished the match hitting .163 after compiling an attacking percentage of .325 in the final set. St. Francis only hit .016 over the three sets.
Campbellsville 3, Indiana Tech 1
Campbellsville got off to another strong start and controlled the first set en route to a 3-1 victory over Indiana Tech (7-15). The Warriors tied the match at two in the early going, but that was the only time they tied the score and they never took the lead.
The Lady Tigers used a 5-0 run, followed by an 8-0 to extended its lead to 16-6. Campbellsville continued to pull away as it won the first set, 25-11.
In the second set, Campbellsville could not string together a long run in the early going as the set was played within a two-point window over the first 15 rallies. The Lady Tigers then strung together a 6-0 run to flip a 9-7 deficit into a 13-9 lead.
Campbellsville continued to hold onto the lead until the Warriors stormed back with seven-straight points to grab a 23-19 advantage. The Lady Tigers tried to make to rally once more and they pulled within three points. However, Indiana Tech cut off the run and scored the next two points to tie the match.
The third set carried the same tune as the second with a back-and-forth battle. Indiana Tech had the largest lead of four points in the set in the early going, 11-7. However, Campbellsville rallied back and took a four-point lead of its own, 20-16.
The Warriors did not back down and tied the score at 23 all. The Lady Tigers escaped with the victory in the third set, 25-23, after scoring the final two points to put an end to the Warriors 3-0 run.
Campbellsville picked up another early advantage in the fourth set, 4-2, but Indiana Tech rebounded and took a 6-5 lead. The Lady Tigers countered back and regained the lead and then pushed their lead to 15-9 after a 7-1 run.
Indiana Tech then went on their run to tie the fourth set at 17, forcing a Campbellsville timeout. The Lady Tigers stormed out of the time scoring two-straight points and ended the set on 6-1 spurt to win 25-19 and take the match in the fourth set.
After posting an attacking percentage of .455 in the first set, Campbellsville was held under .260 for the rest of the match and did not hit over .200 in the second and third sets. The Warriors rebounder from a -.074 hitting mark in the first set and finished with a .145 hitting percentage.
The Lady Tigers return to Mid-South Conference action on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET against Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee.
