CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Mark Callaghan broke a scoreless tie in the 48th minute with his first goal of the year and No. 9 Campbellsville held off Mount Vernon Nazarene late to win 1-0 on Thursday night.

Callaghan received a pass from Ignacio Mangada just outside the box and delivered a rocket past Mount Vernon Nazarene's goalkeeper Adam Miller. The assist was Mangada's first of the year as well.

The Tigers and Cougars had similar stats but Campbellsville (3-0) held possession for most of the second half. CU finished with 12 total shots – five on goal.

Andreas Nota had a busy night in goal during the first half securing three saves but Mount Vernon Nazarene did not threaten with a shot in the second.

The biggest threat from the Cougars in the second period came in the 86th minute. Tim Kasparek received a lob pass over the defense but defender Francesco Ambrosino ran him down from behind and ended the threat with a clean slide tackle.

That was the name of the game for much of the match, as CU's midfield held possession and the defense was stellar.

The win for the Tigers moves them to 3-0 on the year and CU will return to the pitch on Friday night for another non-conference match vs. Kentucky Christian University at 7 p.m.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (1-2) will now travel to Asbury University on Saturday, Sept. 9.
