LEBANON, Ill. — Lady Tiger wrestling registered three first-place and a pair of second-place finishers this weekend at the McKendree University Bearcat Open.
Koral Sugiyama (123),
Grace Bullen (136) and
Kayla Miracle (143) all won their respective weight classes, while
Charlotte Fowler (109) and
Mariah Harris (170) finished second.
No. 3 Sugiyama led the Lady Tigers with 34 team points after pinning her way through all five matches. She took down Lili Flores (Waldorf University), Tiffany Juarez (Ottawa), Lindsey Spujt (McKendree), Briana Bellin (King University) and No. 2 Brenda Reyna (McKendree).
The freshman Bullen, who ranked No. 3 in the latest WCWA rankings, scored 30.5 points for the Lady Tigers and won her way with three tech-falls and a pin. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Bullen tech'd Sha'Nice Jackson of Ottawa University, 10-0, before pinning No. 7 Nicole Joseph of King University. In the semifinal and final, Bullen earned another 10-0 tech fall over Brianna Bogdan (McKendree) and Solin Piearcy (Menlo), respectively.
No. 1 Miracle earned 29.5 team points for CU with two pins, a tech-fall and hard-fought decision in the final. Miracle pinned No. 6 Yvonna Galindo (Oklahoma City), tech'd Addie No. 7 Lanning 10-0 (Ottawa) and pinned Felicity Bryant (Emmanuel) to set up another championship match.
In the final, Miracle earned a 2-1 decision over McKendree's Alexis Porter – who ranks No. 2 at 143lbs.
No. 5 Fowler, earned four tech falls to for a spot in the finals but No. 1 Cody Pfau earned a 10-0 tech over Fowler.
Harris, who ranks No. 6 at 170lbs, also had a big weekend with three wins – a decision and two pins – before falling to Rachel Watters of Oklahoma City, 10-0, in the final.
CU will now host Emmanuel College on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. ET for its final home dual of the season. The Lady Tigers will then hit the road seeking their first WCWA National Championship on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 9-10 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
