Cruz leads the Tigers to season-opening sweep over Bluefield College

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger volleyball started its second season with a 3-0 sweep over Bluefield College on Tuesday night in the Powell Athletic Center (25-18, 25-18, 25-14).

Campbellsville (1-0), which only finished with six sweeps all of last season, earned the sweep tonight after dominating the Rams (1-2) by hitting .338 compared to .070.

Rafael Cruz led the Tigers with 10 kills and four service aces after hitting .280 in the season opener. He was followed by six kills for Max Stotridge, five for Shmuel Edney-Williams and four a piece for Derek Roby and Tyler Vermillion.

In the first set, CU jumped out early but a 6-1 Bluefield run cut the lead to two, 15-13. Campbellsville answered right back with a 7-2 run after Cruz delivered a few aces to give the Tigers a 22-15 lead and forcing Bluefield to call a timeout. CU ended the set on a 10-5 run to win, 25-18.

In the second set, Campbellsville went ahead early 10-5 and later 19-10 before Bluefield called another timeout. The Rams were able to cut the lead to six, 21-15, but Cruz ended any attempt of a comeback with one of his 10 kills and another ace.

The third set started close but CU dominated late. The Rams were able to keep it close and trailed by three, 12-9, but the Tigers finished the match on a 13-5 run.

CU hit a season-high .458 in the set with 14 kills on 14 attacks and only three errors.

The struggle tonight for CU was the service errors, as both teams combined with 22. CU finished with 12, while Bluefield had 10.

The Tigers will now hit the road for eight straight away or neutral matches. CU will compete in the Judson University Invitational this weekend with a pair of games on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27. CU will play Robert Morris and Lawrence Tech on Friday at 7 and 9 p.m., respectively.
