Cruz picks up career-high on Day 1 of Judson University Invitational

ELGIN, Ill. — In the first tournament of the season, Campbellsville men's volleyball split late on Friday night with Robert Morris University and Lawrence Tech. The Tigers lost 3-0 to Robert Morris but bounced back with a 3-1 victory over the Blue Devils.
 
Robert Morris out-hit the Tigers .392 to .151 to earn a 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 win. The Tigers turned the tides in the second match with a 25-21, 25-13, 23-25 and 25-19 victory.

Rafael Cruz led the Tigers with 13 kills but Robert Morris has a pair of Eagles finish in double-figures – Colby Magorien (12) and Nick Spallina (10).
 
The Eagles, who lost to Clarke University earlier in the day, came out on fire in the first two sets by only recording one error in each. Robert Morris hit .542 in the opening frame and .452 in the second to take the 2-0 match lead.

In the first, CU trailed 12-11 but the Eagles finished the set on a 14-3 run.
 
The second frame was a nail-bitter all the way to the end. Robert Morris took a 15-10 lead, but the Tigers went on a 7-2 run and tied the set at 17-all. CU fought off a pair of set points later in the rally but a kill by Magorien seal the 2-0 lead.
 
The third set wasn't as clean for the Eagles, hitting only .167 but the Tigers were unable to capitalize striking at .036.
 
Campbellsville led 10-6 but the Eagles flipped that four-point deficit into a 16-all tie with a 10-6 run. The Tigers were able to regain the lead four more times, including a two-point 23-21 lead, but the Eagles scored four-straight to seal the match.

In the second match, Rafael Cruz had a career night with 17 kills and hit .316 for the Tigers. He was backed up by Max Stotridge's nine kills and he finished with only one error on the night hitting .571.
 
Diego Romero led the Tigers with a new career-high 33 assists in his third match of the year.
 
In the first set, Campbellsville led 10-5 early but the Blue Devils answered right back to lead 12-11. CU scored six of the next 10 points to lead 17-14 but Lawrence Tech came right back to tie the match at 21-all.
 
CU ended the set on a 4-0 run after three consecutive attacking errors by the Blue Devils.
 
The second set was all Campbellsville. The Tigers jumped out to a 15-10 lead and ended the set on a 10-4 run, winning 25-14.
 
The Tigers slipped in the third set and allowed Lawrence Tech to steal a point. The Blue Devils led 15-11 before Campbellsville answered right back with a 9-3 run and led 20-18. CU held a 22-21 advantage but the Blue Devils finished the set on a 4-1 run.
 
The fourth set was a three-to-four point lead for CU throughout until the Tigers won ran away with the 25-19 win.
 
CU is back in action on Saturday with another doubleheader against Quincy University and Siena Heights.
