Tigers drop final two matches at Judson Invitational; Cruz earns All-Tournament honors

ELGIN, Ill. — Tiger volleyball met its match this weekend at the Judson University Invitational, falling in the final two matches to Quincy University and Siena Heights.

CU lost via a pair of sweeps – 25-18, 25-12, 25-21 to Quincy and 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 to Siena Heights. The Tigers finished the weekend with a 1-3 record and are not 2-3 through their first five matches.

Rafael Cruz led Campbellsville with double-figure kills in each match, led by a career-high 17 vs Lawrence Tech on Friday night. Cruz recorded a total of 53 in the four matches to earn All-Tournament team honors. He currently ranks No. 6 in kills per game (3.9) and No. 19 in total kills (63).

Campbellsville vs. Quincy

The Tigers struggled on the offensive side of the net, finishing with a negative hitting percentage for the first time all season. CU hit -.051 and only recorded 23 kills compared to 27 attacking errors.

Cruz led CU with 12 kills and joined Noel Camello with seven digs.

Quincy jumped ahead, 10-5, in the first set and the Tigers were never able to recover. CU did travel 18-9 and finished the set on a 9-7 run but it dug itself too big of a hole from the get-go.

The second set was much of the same, falling behind 10-5 once again and later 17-9. CU wasn't able to muster much offense at the end of the set, falling 25-12.

The Tigers made a few more adjustments on offense throughout the middle of the third set but once again went down early and never fully recovered. CU trailed 15-10 but cut the lead to one, 21-20, before Quincy ended the set on a 4-1 run.

Quincy finished hitting .333 as a team with 33 kills and only 10 errors.

Campbellsville vs. Siena Heights

The Tigers were able to find their offense in the final match of the tournament. CU hit .159 overall but its numbers were much better outside the second frame.

CU picked up its first lead of the tournament 1-0 but it didn't last long as Siena Heights went on a 14-4 run to lead, 14-5. The Tigers were never able to recover as service errors proved costly. CU finished with only three aces and nine errors overall.

The Tigers did hit .304 in the opening set, but Siena Heights countered that with a .476.

The second set was a different story for Campbellsville, only recording six kills.

The final frame was closer as CU made a late rally to cut the deficit to two, 21-19. The Tigers trailed 19-14 but a 5-2 run got them back in it until Siena Heights closed the match on a quick 4-1 run itself.

Campbellsville will now travel to Lincoln College on Friday, Feb. 2 before traveling to Trinity Christian College on Saturday, Feb. 3 to play the Trolls and Maranatha Baptist.
