Cruz leads Tiger volleyball to a triangular split with Trinity Christian and Maranatha Baptist

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — Tiger volleyball earned a split on Saturday afternoon, falling to Trinity Christian University in three sets but coming right back with a sweep over Maranatha Baptist.

Campbellsville fell victim to its second-lowest team hitting percentage of the season against while Trinity Christian hit .308. in the 25-20, 26-24, 25-17 loss. But in match No. 2 CU responded by hitting .268 in the 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 win over Maranatha Baptist (MBU).

Rafael Cruz once again led the Tigers with 34 kills in the two matches, including a career-high 19 vs. MBU. He tallied a .447 hitting percentage in that win. Diego Romero assisted on 52 of Campbellsville's 75 kills on the weekend as well.

Trinity Christian has a trio of Trolls earn double-figure kills, while Eddie Binion finished with a team-high 12. He was followed with 10 kills apiece from Jonathan Poortinga and Djordje Novakovic.

The Trolls took a 1-0 lead and never trailed the rest of the way in the opening set. With the set tied at 5-all, TCC scored six straight points to lead 11-5. The Tigers were able to bring the score back to a one-point deficit, 17-16, with a 11-6 run but the Trolls answered once again by tallying eight of the next 12 points.

After getting down early again, Campbellsville forced Trinity Christian to extra points in the second set. CU took its first lead throughout the opening two sets, 13-12, after Cruz delivered his lone service ace.

Both teams went back and forth until the set was tied at 22 and also 23-all. But a service error and attack error by the Tigers proved to be the deciding factor, falling 26-24.

In the third set, Campbellsville was only able to muster a hitting percentage of .031 and eight kills throughout. The Trolls totaled 16 kills and hit a match-high .394 to win 25-17.

Campbellsville 3, Maranatha Baptist 0

It looked as if CU was hungover from its earlier loss by getting down 3-0 in the first set, but the Tigers rallied to take their first lead at 7-6 and later 11-10 – an advantage it would never surrender.

The second set was much like the first… Campbellsville trailed 5-0 this time before rallying with a 9-3 run to take its first lead, 9-8 – which was also another lead it never surrendered.

In the third, Campbellsville finally started off on the right foot and never trailed. Maranatha Baptist did tie the set at 14, 15 and 16-all, but the Tigers picked up points by Romero, Cruz and Edney-Williams for a quick 3-0 run.

A timeout by MBU didn't slow the Tigers, enroute to the 25-20 victory.

With the split, Campbellsville improves its record to 3-4 on the season and will travel to Milligan College on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
