Tigers’ Quick Start And Pelt’s Late Pick Six Carry Campbellsville To 31-21 Win Over Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. – Campbellsville football jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and never gave up that lead on the way to their 31-21 victory over Cumberland University.
Junior receiver Kendon Young had a big day for the Tigers catching eight passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns, his second career three touchdown game, only doing so last season against Pikeville.

Young's three touchdowns were all scored in the first half as he caught two in the first quarter and his final in the second quarter. His two in the first quarter came on the Tigers' first two possessions of the game as he scored on a 25-yard catch from freshman quarterback Josh Davis and again on a 11-yard pass.

The end of the second quarter was hectic and full of points as the Phoenix scored their first touchdown with a 78-yard blocked field goal return at the 4:08 mark. That was followed quickly by Young's third touchdown on a 21-yarder with 1:08 left in the half. That score was matched even quicker by Cumberland and they completed a 32-yard pass and catch with five seconds left to make it a 10-point Tiger lead going into the half.
Campbellsville's third quarter started rough as their first three possessions ended with three different kinds of turnovers, a turnover on downs, an interception and a fumble.

The Tiger defense held strong in the third forcing three Phoenix punts, a fumble and blocking a field goal attempt.

The defense's biggest contribution came as the fourth quarter was coming to a close and Cumberland was in their two-minute drill. Senior defensive back BJay Pelt sealed the deal for the Tigers with his pick six to bring the Campbellsville lead up to 31-21 after the Phoenix closed in to within three points.

Pelt's interception was the 11th career and his second career pick six tying him for second all-time in Campbellsville history in each category. Pelt joins Percy Minor (2012-15) and Reggie Boggs (1994-97) on the career interceptions list while also joining William Griffith (2004-07), Dwight Houston (2008-11) and Marquis Cain (2015-current) on the career pick six list.

The Tigers will now head into a bye week with a 3-4 record and a 2-1 record in the Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division. After being off next Saturday, Campbellsville will play another road match in two weeks when they go to Georgetown.
