GEORGETOWN, Ky. – It was truly a tale of two halves as the Tigers from Campbellsville fell to the Tigers from Georgetown 31-8 Saturday afternoon at Toyota Stadium.
Georgetown outscored CU 28-0 in the first half with a major turning point in the game coming on Campbellsville's first drive of the game.
With CU on the five-yard line after a 41-yard catch and run from
Jordan Duff, it appeared the
Darquan Richardson had scored their first touchdown of the game but a flag had been thrown for an illegal formation. Georgetown then forced CU to attempt a 29-yard field goal that was missed wide left by
Noah Bicksler.
After already leading 7-0 with a touchdown on their first drive, GC took the ball 80 yards for their second touchdown of the game to lead 14-0. There were two big plays on the drive, first a 38-yard pass from Georgetown quarterback Hunter Krause to tight end Shawn Gilliam and then a fourth down and eight conversion as Krause hit Ross Cox to keep the drive alive before Krause went to Gilliam again for the 15-yard touchdown.
The next drive for Campbellsville ended with a failed fourth down attempt giving the ball to GC on their own 16-yard line before they drove down the field in eight plays and three minutes for as Krause hit receiver Bart Bell in the corner of the end zone for the third Georgetown touchdown.
After starting quarterback
Josh Davis took his fair share of hits in the first half, forcing Campbellsville to go to back-up
Talaileva Sufia for the second half. Though Sufia didn't have a stellar half statistically, only completing six passes for 58 yards, CU outscored Georgetown 8-3 in the second half.
On the one Campbellsville scoring drive, it was less about the offense and more about a few peculiar sequences.
First was a fake punt from CU as offensive lineman,
Trey Binder took the direct snap and ran down the right sideline for 12 yards to continue the drive.
Then with Campbellsville facing a fourth and long situation, GC jumped offside three times in a row to give CU a first down and goal situation. Georgetown committed two more offside penalties along with CU committing a false start before Richardson was able to punch in a three-yard touchdown as Sufia ran in the two-point conversion to make the game 31-8.
The CU defense played well in the second half, preventing the Georgetown offense from scoring on three of their four second half drives. GC was able to eat up over eight minutes of game time to finish the game.
Campbellsville football will return home for their final two contests, first hosting Lindsey Wilson next Saturday before hosting Cincinnati Christian in two weeks for Senior Day.
