CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger volleyball finished out a long day at the Powell Athletic Center with two victories over Fisk University and Xavier University of Louisiana. Fisk and Xavier did also play each other earlier in the day with Xavier winning a 3-0 sweep.
The match of the day was CU against Xavier, which was the only match to go beyond three sets and two of the four sets finishing with a margin of victory of two or three. The Lady Tigers came out on top to win the match three sets to one, 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 28-26.
Sonia Flendrich led the way for Campbellsville with 15 kills while only hitting for a .120 percentage. Katie Johnson and Yalysaveta Sharkova each added 11 kills with Sharkova leading CU in hitting percentage at .375 (11-for-24) and Johnson hitting .250 (11-for-32).
The deciding fourth set went back and forth as the Gold Nuggets had three different five-point leads on the Lady Tigers before CU tied the match up at 20-20. Points were scored in back-and-forth fashion before the match was closed out on a XULA attack error to seal the win for the Lady Tigers.
Campbellsville started their day with their own 3-0 sweep against Fisk winning each set 25-11, 25-12 and 25-19. No CU player had more than six kills but eight of the 11 Lady Tigers to see the floor had three or more kills in the match.
As a team, CU hit for a .322 percentage hitting over .300 in the second (.440) and third sets (.387).
Miranda Wright hit .625 (5-for-8) for the best hitting percentage, best on the team with
Sonia Flendrich (.385),
Savannah Moss (.364),
Maria Coelho (.333) and
Cassidy Mull (.333) all hitting over .300 in the match.
Junior
Ashlyn Flock subbed in at setter for the Lady Tigers for the second and third sets and recorded a career-high 26 assists in the match. Her total of 26 was just two assists shy of her total of 28 in her first two seasons at CU.
CU will hit the road for Mid-South Conference play in their next two matches. Next week the Lady Tigers will play at University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday and at Life University next Saturday. Campbellsville already owns wins against each of those teams this seasaon.
