PIKEVILLE, Ky. —
Troy Walters' golden goal in the 108
thminute sealed Campbellsville win over the University of Pikeville Bears on Wednesday evening in double overtime, 2-1.
The Tigers even their record to 6-6 overall and are now above .500 in Mid-South Conference play at 3-2. The win also extends the Tigers win streak over UPIKE to 14 games and has out-scored the Bears in those contests, 78-5.
Today, it was a knock-down-drag-out type of match. Six total cards were handed out, including two red cards in the final few minutes.
Nathan Heath finished off a pass in the seventh minute from
Sergio Cristaldo to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0. That was all the scoring until the 57
thminute, as the leading scorer for UPIKE, Eric Bernabeu, delivered the equalizer with his 16
thgoal of the year. The score came after a foul in the box and Bernabeu scored the PK.
The Tigers had a chance in the second half to uncork the 1-1 tie, but Heath's kick was saved by Anibal Navarro. Navarro finished with eight saves in goal, while
Owen Stott had just two for Campbellsville.
The scoring would slow again until Walters' fifth goal of the year in the 108
thminute.
The Tigers once again dominated the possession with 23 shots compared to eight for UPIKE.
Campbellsville will now have one final MSC road game as the Tigers travel to University of the Cumberlands on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET.
