Hot start sputters out but Tiger soccer holds on late for first MSC win, 6-4 over Shawnee State

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger soccer scored four goals in the first period and needed every one of them to hold on against Shawnee State on Tuesday night, as Campbellsville won, 6-4. 
 
The Tigers earn their first conference win of the season and improve to 4-5 overall. Shawnee State falls to 0-2 inside the MSC and 7-5 overall. 
 
Nathaniel Fonda delivered two goals in CU's win, but his counterpart Kevin deLang scored two as well to bring the Bears back from a 4-1 deficit. 
 
The scoring started just like the women's game tonight as Campbellsville led 3-0 in the first 6:26. Troy Walters put CU ahead 1-0 in the 51stsecond off a Connor Grant assistant, while Rafael Murube found Fonda in the 2ndminute. Murube then scored a goal of his own in the 6thto put CU ahead, 3-0. 
 
In the 38th, Marc Lawrence scored his first goal of the year to put CU ahead, 4-0, but the Bears answered in the 43rdas Caspar Nolte brought Shawnee State to a three-goal deficit at halftime, 4-1, off a penalty kick. 
 
The Tigers dominated the pitch overall, out-shooting Shawnee State 14-3 in the first period and 19-3 in the second. But Shawnee State took advantage of costly CU mistakes. deLang scored two straight goals in the 48thand 54thminutes, respectively, bringing the Campbellsville lead to one, 4-3. 
 
But Fonda answered right back and then the Bears fell victim to an own-goal – both scores only 30 seconds a part – to give CU momentum at the end. 
 
Alek Blevins finished the scoring in the 62ndbut the Tigers were able to hold on late. 
 
Owen Stott finished with two saves – both in the first period - while Kade Tomlinson had a career-high 17 saves for the Bears. 
 
Campbellsville will now hit the road on Sunday as the Tigers travel to Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
