Shorthanded Lady Tiger Volleyball Pulls Out Comeback Victory Over Cumberland

Flendrich carries the load for Campbellsville with 17 kills

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – For the second-straight home match, Campbellsville women's volleyball pulled off a five-set victory after trailing a set twice in the match.

This time it came without three of their best outside hitters, as Julia Fonseca, Katie Johnson and Maria Coelho were unable to play Tuesday night at the Powell Athletic Center.

Freshman Sonia Flendrich rose to the challenge in their absence, recording a career-high 17 kills in the match. Flendrich was the favorite target of fellow freshman and setter Paige Merrick as Flendrich had 56 attack attempts.

The fifth and final set was the most intense as the score went back-and-forth with five ties and three lead changes in the 15-13 Lady Tiger victory. Cumberland led late in the set 13-11 but Campbellsville rattled off four straight points, capped off by a Savannah Moss kill, for the victory.

In their set losses, Campbellsville showed how thin they were on the attack, losing the first 25-17 and the third 25-15. The Lady Tigers hit .059 in the first and -.132 in the third, doing themselves in with 17 total attack errors in the two sets.

A switch flipped in the fourth set as the Lady Tigers recorded 23 kills, over half of their total in the match, after the conclusion of the third set. They also eliminated their unforced errors only committing seven attack errors in the final two sets of the match.

Lady Tiger volleyball will not play another match for six days when they host the University of Pikeville next Tuesday at the Powell Athletic Center. A much needed break for Campbellsville after playing six matches in the previous seven days.
