Battle of Highway 55 goes in favor of Lindsey Wilson for third straight season

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A pair of safeties are all Campbellsville University football could muster against rival and No. 17 Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday in a 21-4 loss.

The Blue Raiders retain the traveling Highway 55 Trophy as it will go back to Columbia for the third straight season. Lindsey Wilson also has a slight 5-4 lead in the series.

Today, Campbellsville (3-6, 2-3 MSC) couldn't find its offense after the defense gave the Tigers multiple opportunities early in the contest. Turnovers haunted once more as CU fell victim to five miscues – four interceptions and a fumble.

But Lindsey Wilson could only register seven points off those turnovers as the Tigers defense held the Blue Raiders to 268 total yards – which is the lowest output for LWC all season.

The Tigers forced four 3-and-outs on the day – with two of them in the first two drives. On the second Lindsey Wilson possession, Campbellsville got on the board first with a safety at the 10:58 mark of the first quarter. Lindsey Wilson's punter Jared Dougherty heard footsteps in the east end zone and the snap sailed through his hands for the 2-0 CU lead.

On the ensuing drive after the free kick, Noah Bicksler's 40-yard field goal attempt was blocked – which was the first of two blocks on the day for Lindsey Wilson.

But the next Blue Raider possession turned into another opportunity setup with the Tigers' stellar defense. BJ Pelt registered his 12th-career interception to get the ball right back to CU, but the Tigers had to punt twice and fumbled on the next three drives.

That just seemed to be how Campbellsville's day would go.

On the final drive of the first quarter and first of the second quarter, the Blue Raiders scored two of their three touchdowns. Cameron Dukes rushed for 25-yards to cap a nine-play drive to give Lindsey Wilson a 7-2 lead. On the first possession of the second frame, Dukes hit Darius Clark for a 38-yard pass and catch to put LWC ahead, 14-2.

The Tigers defense held strong once more forcing back-to-back 3-and-outs and only allowing two total yards in that span, but the offense was stagnant. The biggest rally killer was another blocked field goal. After CU's nine-play drive late in the first half, Lindsey Wilson blocked another Bicksler attempt.

On the next three drives for the Tigers, quarterback Josh Davis threw three interceptions and the Tigers were forced to punt on another to give Lindsey Wilson multiple chances to cash in. The Blue Raiders did with 2:19 left in the third as Dukes found Cam Wyche for nine-yards giving LWC a 21-2 lead.

The Tigers did come up with another safety early in the fourth quarter but the last two drives for Campbellsville's offense ended by turning the ball over on downs.

Campbellsville out-gained the Blue Raiders in total yards, 344-268 and tallied 16 more first downs, 26-10. CU also had the ball for almost half the time Lindsey Wilson did in time of possession, 40:08 – 19:52.

Tala Sufia started the day at QB but went 11-of-19 for 139 yards, while Davis was 9-of-22 for 66 yards. Kendon Young had a solid day through the air with seven catches for 94 yards.

The Tigers will now conclude their season next week with Senior Day against Cincinnati Christian on Nov. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET at Finley Stadium.
