No. 10 Cumberlands upsets No. 2 Lady Tiger wrestling in season opener

WILLIAMSBURG. Ky. — Second-ranked Campbellsville went on the road and lost to No. 10 University of the Cumberlands in the first Mid-South Conference dual of the season, 24-19.

The Lady Tigers pulled out four wins over the Patriots last season but were without Charlotte Fowler and Mariah Harris tonight and Cumberlands took advantage.

UC (1-0) picked up bonus points with three pins overall and one tech fall – which totaled 19 of its 24 points.

The night started with a pin at 101 lbs. Cumberlands' Becca Forsyth took down Katelyn Barnett in 2:42 to give the Patriots an early, 5-0 lead.

Campbellsville's McKayla Campbell came right back with an easy 10-0 tech fall over Olivia Coyne at 109 lbs. to get the deficit back to one, 5-4.

At 116 lbs., Maria Ramos lost via pin at 3:39 and Cumberlands extended its lead to six, 10-4. But the Lady Tigers won back-to-back matches and knotted the dual at 11-all.

At 123 lbs., Koral Sugiyama picked up a 12-4 decision over Madison Angelito cutting the lead to four, 11-7. Then former national champion Andribeth Rivera earned an easy 10-0 tech fall over Ashley Ikner at 130 lbs.

With the score at 11-all, Cumberlands then won three-straight to seal the dual. At 143 lbs., Kelly-Ann Jimenez earned a tech fall over Lilly Binion-Ferrell and at 155 lbs., Anna Naylor defeated Alexis Foca with a 10-3 decision.

Campbellsville's Kenya Sloan and Alexia Castillo both won their matches at 170 and 191 lbs., respectively, but it was too little too late. Sloan earned a 10-0 tech fall, while Castillo won via decision, 8-2.

The Lady Tigers will now travel to the Missouri Valley College Invitational in Marshall, Mo. this weekend, Sunday, Nov. 18.
