MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Trailing by one point with 22 seconds left, CU men's basketball needed a score against Voorhees College.
Hagen Tyler drove the ball to the basket and missed his layup but
Joan Duran was there to tip in the rebound to give the Tigers the 70-69 lead that they would eventually win by.
Then with 7.2 seconds left, the Tigers needed a stop and a stop is what they got. As Voorhees came down the floor, Javari Albergottie took a contested three as the clock ran out that was no good to give CU the victory.
Duran and Tyler were the offensive stars for the Tigers Friday night as Tyler led the team in scoring with 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, 3-for-6 from three. Duran added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as he only missed one shot from the field.
CU struggled shooting three pointers and free throws on the night as that's what kept Voorhees in the game. The Tigers were 5-for-21 (23.8%) from three and 11-for-25 (44%) from the free throw line.
Where the Tigers succeeded throughout the game against Voorhees was their rebounding and bench scoring.
On the glass, Campbellsville grabbed 52 rebounds to 36 for VC. Individually, Duran's 11 boards were the most with six of them being offensive rebounds as Tyler pulled down nine of his own and
Deion Evans added seven. Every Tiger player that saw action had at least two rebounds.
The Tiger bench of Duran,
Sam Weining and
Calvin Fletcher scored 26 points to only 15 for the Voorhees bench that saw six players get minutes. Weining added eight points in just 13 minutes and Fletcher scored three points hitting a shot and a free throw.
CU will play one more game of the Faulkner Classic Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET as they take on Point University who played the second game against host Faulkner Friday night.
