Strong defensive effort and Smith’s second straight double-double leads Tigers in 93-69 win over Berkeley

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In a game that the Tigers' never trailed, Campbellsville men's basketball played one of its better defensive games of the season in their 93-69 victory over Berkeley College in their first game of the Campbellsville Classic Friday night.

The Knights were held to 38.1 percent shooting in the game while only managing to grab eight offensive rebounds which led to only one second-chance basket. CU also outrebounded Berkeley 44 to 37 in the game to win the board battle.

The Tigers' leading rebounder was senior forward Andrew Smith who grabbed 12 along with his 27 points for his second double-double of the season in as many games.

Hagen Tyler (20), Stephaun Adams (16) and Joan Duran (13) were the other CU players in double figures. Tyler moved to eight on the all-time scoring list, passing Marcio Kardosh and jumping to 1,505 total points in his Campbellsville career. He only needs 12 points to pass Ramont Smith for seventh all-time.

The second half was Tyler's time to shine as he led all scorers in the half with 16 points after scoring only four in the first half. Tyler was perfect from beyond the arc (3-for-3), hitting some big buckets to help CU extend their lead to 34, which was their largest of the game.

The opening 20 minutes were carried by Smith and Duran who had 28 of the Tigers' 52 points at the break as they led 52-31. Two runs pushed the lead up to 20 as they went on a 10-0 run from 16:50 to 14:29 in the first half then a big 12-2 run that included a 7-0 run pushed the score to 42-22 at the 5:27 mark.

Adams continued to score and facilitate for the Tigers getting eight assists along with his 16 points. The senior guard from the Virgin Islands once again stuffed the stat sheet for CU also adding six rebounds.

Both teams got 18 points from their bench as the Tigers could have gotten no offensive production from the bench and still would have won 75-69. CU also won the battles for points in the paint, 34-30, points off of turnovers 23-15 and second chance points 11-2.

The Tigers will have a quick turnaround to play Allen University tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET at the Powell Athletic Center. CU will look to move to 9-0 to start the season after the Yellow Jackets lost their first game of the Campbellsville Classic to the University of the Cumberlands 90-81.
