POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – It was a rollercoaster-type match for Campbellsville women's volleyball in their opening match of the NCCAA Championship Pool Play Thursday afternoon. The Lady Tigers fell to Southwestern Christian College 3-2 as the Eagles won the final set 16-14.
CU had brought the match to the fifth set after trailing two sets to none early on as Southwestern Christian won those first two sets 26-24 and 25-18. The Lady Tigers responded by winning the third and fourth sets 25-21 and 25-22 respectively to force the deciding set.
The fifth set started off very well for Campbellsville jumping out to a 5-0 lead and even leading by as much as six points at 7-1 and 12-6. With the Lady Tigers up 14-10 and a point away from victory, the Eagles scored the next six points to steal the match by winning the set 16-14.
Individually, CU's Katie Johnson had arguable her best match of the season as she recorded a team-high 20 kills while hitting for a .220 hitting percentage. Johnson also recorded 21 digs in the match for a double-double to also be the only Lady Tiger with a double-double.
Setter
Paige Merrick had her fourth 50-set match of the season and also committed no set errors in the match.
Yelysaveta Sharkova also added 12 kills from the middle while hitting for a .478 hitting percentage.
The Lady Tigers will have a quick turnaround, as they will play Piedmont International University at 5 p.m. ET in their second match of Pool Play.
