Lady Tigers use massive second-half run to come from behind against West Virginia Tech

Stewart leads Lady Tigers with first-career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger basketball trailed at halftime for just the second time this season but came alive in the third and fourth quarters and ran away with an 84-68 win over West Virginia Tech.

No. 5 Campbellsville got down by seven points twice today – once in the first quarter and another time in the second frame, 32-25, after a Brittney Justice 3-pointer for West Virginia Tech.

The Lady Tigers didn't go away, though. CU went on a 11-4 run to even the score at 36-all but the Golden Bears answered right back. Justice, Savannah Shamblin and Isabel Barrio helped Tech to a 7-0 run and led, 43-36, with 1:55 remaining in the second quarter.

The Golden Bears (7-7) were shooting the lights out early. West Virginia Tech started the game by hitting 60 percent from the floor (18-of-30), while Campbellsville was just 16-of-41 in the first 20 minutes.

But that quickly changed in the final minute of the first half and the first 15-plus minutes of the second. CU closed the second quarter on a mini 6-2 run and cut the deficit to three, 43-40, at the break. The next 15:40 of game time was the difference maker. The Lady Tigers went on a 43-15 run to break the game open and improve their record to 11-1 overall.

During the massive run, Campbellsville went 16-of-33 from the floor and held the Golden Bears to 7-of-25. The Lady Tigers capitalized by turning their defense into offense, as CU upped its pressure and forced West Virginia Tech to miss seven straight shots in a three-minute span of the third quarter. On the flip side, Campbellsville had a run of scoring on three straight possessions with Jordan Doram scoring two of her 12 points and Madison Kaiser pitching in four of her team-high 16.

After hitting 60 percent in the first half, West Virginia Tech cooled in a big way, hitting 11-of-31 in the second half and finishing the game hitting 48 percent. The Lady Tigers turned the Golden Bears over 29 times and scored 30 points off those miscues.

West Virginia Tech did out-rebound Campbellsville, 43-40, but Madison Stewart was a forced in the paint the second half. Stewart tallied her first-career double-double with 10 points and 14 boards along with three assists.

Savannah Gregory, who was questionable coming into the day with a sore neck, was her usual self. She scored 16 points, grabbed six boards and dished out two assists. Caitlin Hall upped her seven assists per game just a touch with eight dimes to lead all passers.

Justice led all scorers with 20 points but the Golden Bears didn't have anyone else in double figures.

With the win, the Lady Tigers finish the home portion of their schedule with a 5-0 mark to end the first semester. Campbellsville hits the road on Tuesday-Wednesday, Dec. 19-20, for the Pikeville Classic against Marian University and the University of Saint Francis. Tipoff on Tuesday vs. Marian is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, while the Lady Tigers and Saint Francis are set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
