Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jordan Alves

Slow start turns into best basketball Lady Tigers played all year in 100-66 win over Marian

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — After a slow opening quarter, fifth-ranked Campbellsville University women's basketball came alive to run past NAIA DII No. 7 Marian University, 100-67.

The Lady Tigers (13-1) were sloppy with a season-high five turnovers and season-low 11 points in the opening quarter. The rest of the way was arguably the best basketball Campbellsville has played all season.

After going 5-of-14 from the floor, 1-of-3 from the 3-point line, not shooting a free throw and only dishing out one assist, the Lady Tigers were the exact opposite in the final three frames. Campbellsville finished the final three quarters by hitting 32-of-55 (58%) from the floor, 7-of-13 (53%) from deep, made 18 of its 20 free throws, dished out 18 assists and turned the ball over just five times. That was difference maker.

Leading the Lady Tigers was reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week, Madison Kaiser. She scored a team-high 17 points, followed with 14 points by Madison Faulkner, and 12 points by Madison Stewart and Jordan Doram. Stewart was two boards away from back-to-back doubles-doubles with eight.

The tides turned to start the second quarter. Trailing 17-11 after 10 minutes of play, Gregory hit a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 run and give CU its second lead of the day,  first since the 30 second mark – which was also a basket by Gregory.

The run continued, though. On the next play, Gregory started a fast break opportunity with a steal and Caitlin Hall found Stewart with a no-look pass to extend the Lady Tiger run to 9-0. Overall, Campbellsville out-scored the Knights, 33-11, in the second quarter to lead at halftime, 44-28.

During that second frame, the Lady Tigers hit 11-of-20 from the floor, 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point line and made all 10 free throws.

Starting the third quarter, Campbellsville went on an 8-2 and pushed its lead to 52-30. Marian University had one final push in them, though. The Knights cut the lead to as little as 14 points, 65-51, with 3:24 left in the third but Campbellsville held Marian scoreless the rest of the quarter and finished the frame on a 14-0 run – which was capped by a Doram buzzer beater off an in-bounds pass with 2.4 seconds left.

Lexy Lake scored nine of her 11 points in the final quarter by hitting 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point line. She was joined by Gregory with 11 points.

Overall, the Lady Tigers finished with 14 offensive rebounds and capitalized with 28 second-chance points. CU also scored 31 points off the 27 turnovers by Marian – which is a season-high for the Knights.

The 100 points allowed by Marian is also the most since a matchup vs. Olivet Nazarene – a 109-103 win for Marian on Nov. 14, 2015.

Campbellsville returns to the floor vs. Saint Francis University – which is ranked No. 25 in the NAIA DII poll – on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET from the East Ky. Expo Center. Coverage beings on the CU Sports Network, 88.7 The Tiger, at 9:45.
