Big second half comeback falls short as Lady Tigers fall to St. Francis Cougars, 76-75

Savannah Gregory hit all four of her 3-point baskets in the second half but St. Francis ices game with free throws late

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Facing a 23-point deficit with 4:20 left in the third quarter, No. 5 Campbellsville University women's basketball made a comeback for the ages but fell short to the University of Saint Francis, 76-75.

For the second-straight game, a slow start haunted the Lady Tigers in the East Ky. Expo Center. Campbellsville (12-2) hit just 27 percent from the floor, while the Cougars (10-5) lit a flame to the nets by hitting 60 percent in the first half.

At the 7:50 mark in the second quarter, Caitlin Hall hit a 3-pointer to pull Campbellsville within seven points, 27-20. But it went downhill from there. The Lady Tigers missed their final 10 field goal attempts to end the frame and trailed, 40-23, at the break.

The two Cougars that were the difference maker for Saint Francis - Lauren McBryar and Kara Greka. The two combined to score 31 of the 40 first-half points and ended the day with 45 of the 76. No other Cougar found double-figures. Gerka led the way with 24.

For Campbellsville, Hall led the way at the break with eight points, while Savannah Gregory had six. The second half, especially the fourth quarter, became the Savannah Gregory show. She finished with a career-high 24 points to lead CU. Jordan Doram also had a nice day in the paint with 13 points.

With 4:20 left in the third quarter, McBryar hit her fifth 3-pointer of the day and Savannah Buck followed suit with her second triple to put the Cougars ahead, 57-34. Then came the charge for Campbellsville. The Lady Tigers ended the third quarter on a 9-2 run and held the Cougars without a field goal in the span.

Trailing by 16 points, 59-43, to start the final quarter, the Lady Tigers made a comeback for the ages and out-scored the Cougars, 32-17, in the final 10 minutes.

Madison Stewart hit a 3 to score three of her 11 points, while Doram ran down a steal on the defensive end and capitalized with a bucket on the other end to cut the lead to 11, 59-48.

Then it became the Gregory show. The redshirt sophomore banged a 3-pointer with 8:39 left and then hit another at 7:02 mark cutting the deficit to single digits for the first time since midway through the second quarter, 63-55.

Just 14 seconds later, CU picks up a pair of steals leading to two Madison Faulkner free throws and Gregory's third 3-pointer in a span of 1:50 of game action.

Trailing by five, 63-58, Gregory wiggled free once more at the top of the key to drain her fourth Edward Jones 3-pointer to cap a 27-7 run by CU and cut the St. Francis lead to three, 64-61.

Both teams traded baskets in the next few minutes until Lexy Lake got in on the fun with a 3-pointer at the 2:45 mark cutting the deficit back to three, 67-64. CU worked the Cougar lead to two, 70-68, after Stewart hit a pair of free throws and Gregory earned a steal and layup with 1:05 left.

In the final 33 seconds, the Lady Tigers forced the Cougars to hit their free throws and Gerka gave CU a chance with 8.6 seconds left. She missed the back-end of the bonus and the Lady Tigers called a timeout to advance the ball past half court. But a turnover out of the break gave the ball right back to the Cougars and a chance to ice the game at the charity stripe – which they did.

Savannah Buck hit 1-of-2 free throws and McBryar made two with 5.7 ticks left. Gregory did hit a 3-pointer with time expiring but it was too little too late for CU.

The Cougars gave CU a chance by missing the back-end of four-straight bonus opportunities at the stripe in the final three-plus minutes.

Overall, the Lady Tigers finished with more made field goals (26-of-63) and worked their averaged from 27 percent at halftime to 41 percent to end the contest. But the Cougars hit one more 3-pointer (11-of-18) than Campbellsville (10-of-19) and tallied four more free throws (17-of-24) compared to 13-of-17 for CU.

The Lady Tigers had 22 second chance points with 19 offensive rebounds and CU also out-scored St. Francis off turnovers, 20-12.

With the loss, Campbellsville heads into the Christmas break hungry to get back on the court. The Lady Tigers do so on Dec. 29 in Mobile, Alabama against the University of Mobile at 3 p.m. ET. CU also plays Faulkner University on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala. to close out non-conference play. Both games will air on the CU Sports Network.
