Tigers return to form with 90-52 win in final game of 2018

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – After suffering their first loss of the season last night, Campbellsville men's basketball bounced back in a strong way Sunday afternoon with a 90-52 win over Freed-Hardeman University.

Carried by a couple of double-digit scoring runs, one in each half, CU did not let last night's loss carry over into today's action. In the first half, it was a 17-0 run starting when the Tigers led 17-12 around the 12-minute mark that went on for the next six minutes to push the lead to 34-12.

There was not much looking back from there as the first half was all CU, who went into the halftime break up 50-23. The Tigers shot 62.1% in the half with every player that saw time on the floor getting a basket that was capped off by back-to-back three pointers hit by freshman Sam Weining.

The balance in the offense was evident throughout the game as no Campbellsville player took more than 10 shots on the game. Head coach Brent Vernon also spread out the minutes well on Sunday with no one playing more than 26 minutes and everyone that saw the floor besides one player playing more than 17 minutes in the game.

For the game, four Tigers finished with double figures led by Stephaun Adams and Andrew Smith who finished tied for a game-high with 19 points each. Hagen Tyler (12) and Joan Duran (14) each finished with double figures as 10 of Tyler's 12 came in the first half.

The run that came in the second half was 11-0 in a quicker timespan than the run in the first half as the Tigers pushed their 61-35 lead up to 72-35, which would be one of the largest leads of the game.

CU was money from the free throw line on Sunday, going 7-for-7 in the first half and 11-for-14 in the second half to finish the game with an 85.7 percent mark in the game from the charity stripe.

A strong CU defensive effort that held the Lions to only 52 points for the game also saw the team's rebounding as everyone but one player grabbing three or more rebounds in the game. Led by seven apiece from Smith and Duran, 35 of the 41 total rebounds for the Tigers were grabbed on the defensive end.

The final game of 2018 for Campbellsville was also the final non-conference game of the season as CU finished the non-conference portion of the schedule 14-1. Up next will be a trip to Georgetown on Jan. 5 as the first Mid-South Conference game will be a match-up of likely top-10 NAIA foes.
