Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brett Tudela

Late basket and stop carries No. 9 Georgetown by No. 7 Campbellsville 69-67 in MSC opener

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – It was a defensive battle between top-10 teams in Georgetown Saturday afternoon as the Tigers from Georgetown came out on top 69-67 at the Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.

The game-winning basket was scored by GC's Eljay Cowherd with 4.7 seconds on the clock as he hit a running layup with the score tied at 67-67.

Needing to go the length of the floor in about five seconds, CU put the ball in the hands of Stephaun Adams who got the ball knocked out of bounds as the refs awarded the ball to Georgetown with just over a second left in the game. GC inbounded the ball and the game was over with a GC 69-67 win.

Campbellsville had their largest lead of the day at 57-47 with about 10 minutes left in the second half as Georgetown finished the game on a 22-10 run over the last nine minutes.

Much like their only other loss this season, CU was carried offensively in the second half by one player, Saturday it was Andrew Smith. Smith scored 18 of his 21 points in the game in the second half as the rest of the lineup was relatively quiet in the half.

Hagen Tyler finished with 14 points, moving to sixth place all-time on the CU scoring list with a layup at the 2:57 mark of the second half. Tyler passed Cecil Eillis, who had 1,676 points in his career, as Tyler now has 1,679 all alone in sixth. Tyler will hit the top-five at 1,723 where James Boulware sits currently.

A back and forth first half saw CU win the offensive efficiency battle but Georgetown won the battle on the boards. Campbellsville shot better from the field going 14-for-32 (43.8%) compared to just 38.5% for Georgetown as GC grabbed 26 rebounds to Campbellsville's 18.

GC scored 12 second chance points in the first period of play on their 10 offensive rebounds but CU made up for that by hitting six three-pointers in the half compared to just one from Georgetown.

After trailing 25-23, Tyler hit two big back-to-back three pointers to push the score to 29-25 in favor of Campbellsville. Adams was super efficient from the floor in the first half scoring 12 on 5-for-7 shooting hitting two of his four three pointers taken, including a desperation shot that banked in as the shot clock ran out.

Campbellsville shortened their rotation Saturday only playing seven total players in the game. The starting five of Adams, Smith, Tyler, Deion Evans and Jacob King were only subbed out for Joan Duran and Ronald Taylor off the bench.

CU will look to get in the win column in Mid-South Conference play next Thursday as the host the Cumberland University Phoenix at the Powell Athletic Center. The game is schedule to tip at 8 p.m. after the conclusion of the Lady Tigers game against Cumberland.
