CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville's men's volleyball team posted a 1-1 mark on the final day of their home invitational. The Tigers first suffered a three-set loss to Siena Heights University and then swept Judson University to round out the day in Gosser Gymnasium.
Rafael Cruz and
Jeremy Hernandez combined for 52 of the Tigers' (5-6) 78 kills during the two matches on Saturday afternoon.
Diego Romero notched 57 assists over the two matches.
Siena Heights 3, Campbellsville 0
Against the Saints (8-1), Campbellsville's offense struggled as it compiled a .099 attacking mark in the match and hit over .100 in just the second set.
The first set opened with Siena Heights jumping out to a 5-2 lead, but the Tigers stormed back and tied the score at 10. However, the Saints scored three-straight points and eight of the next nine to grab an 18-11 advantage en route to winning the opening stanza, 25-17.
Campbellsville flipped the script in the second set after grabbing an 8-4 lead, which was highlighted by a 4-0 run. After Siena Heights tied the score at 10 once again, the Tigers rebounded with a 5-2 run to regain the lead. Campbellsville's lead did not last long, following an 8-1 run from the Saints and they went on take the second set, 25-18.
Siena Heights got of to a hot start in the third set and jumped out to an 11-3 lead. The Tigers rallied once more, but only could get as close as two points four different times and the Saints completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third set.
Campbellsville recorded two more points than Siena Heights, 43-41, but the Tigers had 24 attacking errors, 13 service errors, four reception errors and a pair of setting errors.
Cruz finished with 11 kills in the match and Hernandez notched 10 for Campbellsville. Tyler Hubbard-Neil matched Cruz's match-high 11 kills.
Noel Camello finished with a match best 14 digs for the Tigers.
Campbellsville 3, Judson 0
Following the loss during its first game of the day, Campbellsville had to bounce back quickly as it played back-to-back games on Saturday and faced Judson in the finale of the invitational.
The Tiger offense was clicking on all cylinders during the first two sets and hit .333 in the first set, followed by a .406 attacking mark in set two.
Campbellsville fell behind early in the opening set, with the Eagles (1-13) jumping out to a 7-3 lead. The Tigers took their first lead of the set at 10-9 and never looked back. Campbellsville's largest lead of the set was 19-12, which capped off an 8-2 run. Judson tried to rally in the set, but only pulled within three points, 20-17, as the Tigers won the first set, 25-19.
After a back-and-forth start to the second set, Campbellsville took control in the second half set. With the score tied at seven, the Tigers outscored the Eagles, 9-3, over the next 12 rallies to grab a six-point lead. Judson could not rebound from the deficit and Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead after another 25-19 victory.
Judson looked avoid the sweep and raced out to a quick 5-2 advantage in the third set. The Tigers trailed all the way until they tied the score, 17-17, late in the third set. Three-straight points gave Campbellsville its first lead of the set at 18-17 and the two teams continued to trade points down the stretch. The Eagles fought of a pair of set points and tied the score at 25, however, the Tigers scored two-straight points to complete the sweep and win the final set, 27-25.
Following attacking marks of at least .333 in the first two sets, Campbellsville hit just .024 in the third set. Hernandez posted a match-high 16 kills and Cruz was just behind with 15. Romero finished with 37 of the Tigers' 40 assists in the match.
Campbellsville wraps up its four-match homestand on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET against Cincinnati Christian University.
