Faulkner continues torrid pace; Lady Tigers used defense to dominate Cumberlands

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger basketball extend its win streak to five after securing another Mid-South Conference victory over University of the Cumberlands Saturday afternoon, 84-66.  
 
Defense continues to be the Lady Tigers (23-3, 9-1 MSC) strong suite. CU is a perfect 22-0 when leading heading into halftime and the defense played a major role in that. CU forced 14 first-half turnovers and scored 15 points off those miscues to take an 11-point lead into the break.
 
Cumberlands (15-9, 3-7 MSC) never was able to get the lead smaller than 10 the rest of the contest.
 
Madison Faulkner continues her stellar conference by setting a new career-high 23 points. Over the past five games, Faulkner has scored at least 14 points, 16 in her last three, and is averaging 17. Faulkner also leads the Lady Tigers on the glass averaging 4.3 boards a game and collected a game-high seven today.
 
UC's Cheyenne Madden led all scoring with 24 points and grabbed five rebounds. She was joined by Kayla Bruner's 20 points. But Jordan Doram, Savannah Gregory and Madison Stewart all aided Faulkner by out-scoring the Patriots 42-26 in the paint. Doram and Gregory both pitched in 10 points, while the Lady Tigers shot 46 percent (31-of-67).
 
The Lady Tigers had control of the lead for all 40 minutes today and took their largest lead of 22 points in the fourth quarter.
 
The Lady Tigers came out hot in the first quarter and started with a 6-0 run and extend that to 15-3 forcing coach Missy Irvin to call a pair of timeouts in the first four-plus minutes.
 
CU led 23-11 after the first quarter but Cumberlands was able to outscore the Lady Tigers 18-17 in the second period, cutting the deficit to 11 heading into the half.
 
Campbellsville started the third quarter much like it started the game - going on a quick 10-0 pushing the lead to 21.
 
Lady Tigers went frigid from the floor and Cumberland stepped up its defense to get back in the game. CU didn't score for over three minutes and the Patriots countered with an 11-0 run. With the margin now at 10 points, the Lady Tigers responded right back pushing the lead to 16 with a quick 6-0 run.
 
Cumberlands never worked the lead below 13 in the fourth quarter.
 
The Lady Tigers look to continue their win streak as they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio on Feb. 15 for a rematch against the second-ranked Shawnee State Bears. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
