Lady Tigers run out of gas late, fall on the road in overtime No. 1 Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Top-ranked Shawnee State University out-scored No. 3 Campbellsville 15-3 in overtime to run away with a 90-78 win over the Lady Tigers on Thursday night.

It was a heavyweight match tonight, as the lead changed hands 12 times and a total of 18 ties. Campbellsville (23-4, 8-2 MSC) trailed by as many as eight points midway through the fourth quarter but the Lady Tigers went on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to two points, 69-67, after Madison Stewart scored a pair of her 11 points.

Madison Faulkner, who led the Lady Tigers with 22 points, tied the game at 73-all with 1:25 left. Six seconds later, Faulkner fouled out and Campbellsville struggled to find its offense the rest of the way scoring just five points in the final 6:19 of play (regulation and overtime).

The lone point for CU in the final 1:19 was the front-end of the one-and-one for Savannah Gregory. She hit the first but missed the second to give the Lady Tigers a 75-73 lead with 49 seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, Bailey Cummins missed a 3 but Shawnee State (24-3, 11-0 MSC) stayed alive by picking up a dead-ball offensive rebound – its 11th and arguably the biggest offensive board of the game.

With the second opportunity, Hannah Miller was fouled by Gregory and made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 75. The Lady Tigers had an opportunity late in regulation, but Madison Clements' jumper missed with the buzzer sounding.

In the overtime period, Miller was the key for the Bears. She scored 11 of the 15 Shawnee State points and the Bears held Campbellsville to only three points in the extra frame.

CU finished 1-of-5 from the floor and turned the ball over twice aiding Shawnee State's run in front of a packed Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium.

Miller led all scorers with 22 points – 20 of them coming in the second half and 11 coming in the overtime period. She was followed with 21 points for Ashton Lovely, who hit a season-high 7-of-13 triples. Madison Ridout finished with a double-double 15 points and 11 boards.

Campbellsville finished hitting 29-of-69 (43%) compared to 23-of-56 (41%) for Shawnee State but the Bears knocked down 10 3-point baskets compared to CU's three – which was the difference maker.

Behind Faulkner's 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting, Jordan Doram totaled 17, while Gregory had 14 points and seven boards to lead the Lady Tigers.

The biggest stat line was the rebounding. CU held a slight advantage, 15-14, at halftime but the Bears out-rebounded Campbellsville 27-15 in the second half with eight of those on the offensive glass tallying a total of eight points.

With the win, the Bears now lead the MSC regular season standings with 11 wins. Campbellsville remains in second place at 9-2, while Lindsey Wilson is 8-3.

The Lady Tigers travel to University of Pikeville (13-14, 4-7 MSC) on Saturday to conclude their regular season schedule. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET at the East Kentucky Convention Center.
