HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Campbellsville held first-inning leads against both No. 25 Webber International University and No. 6 William Carey University, but the Tigers lost both contests on Friday at Milton Wheeler Field.
Campbellsville's (1-3) offense went cold in game one and recorded just three hits, while the Tigers recorded six hits in game two, but left 10 runners on base.
Webber International 7, Campbellsville 1
Matthew Valdez got the Tigers off to a strong start with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning to put Campbellsville on top 1-0. However, the Valdez home run was the only offense the Tigers seen in the first game on Friday.
Webber International came right back with three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the second inning. The Warriors (3-8) continued to pull away scoring a run on two hits in the fifth inning and three more runs in the seventh inning to cap off the game.
In the seven-inning contest, the Tigers only mustered up three hits. After the leadoff home run from Valdez in the first inning, Campbellsville did not record a hit until the bottom of the seventh inning when
DePaul Blunt notched his first hit with the Tigers and
Tyler Deason notched his fourth hit of the season.
Doug Pearl (1-0) tossed all seven innings for the Warriors and struck six batters and walked just one. Pearl retired 16-straight batters from the end of the first inning until Blunt's lead off single in the seventh inning.
Logan Roberts (1-1) started for Campbellsville and threw 3-1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Roberts struck out six batters, but allowed three walks.
Marco Murillo threw the final 3-2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits.
William Carey 5, Campbellsville 4 (10 innings)
Campbellsville got off to another strong start with Valdez reaching first on an error to start the game. After a wild pitch moved Valdez over third base, he scored on
Tyson Solis' ground ball to the shortstop. Solis then reached base on the Crusaders' second error in as many batters.
The Tigers only pushed one run across after William Carey (7-1) got out of the inning with a strikeout, catching Solis stealing second and a fly out.
In the top half of the third inning, Campbellsville tacked on another run.
Brandon Douglas started the inning with a walk and
Jalen Horton -- who came into pinch run -- came around to score with two outs after a single to left field from Roberts.
William Carey got a run back in the home half of the third inning as a wild pickoff throw from
Mikey Hooper allowed Christian Smith – who reached on leadoff walk – to advance to third and he touched home on a groundout from David Pimentel.
Hooper got out the third inning allowing just the one run and kept the Tigers ahead by a run.
Campbellsville continued to find success in the odd innings, as they loaded the bases without recording a hit in the top of the fifth inning. However, the Tigers could not cash in as they left the bases loaded and continued to maintain a 2-1 lead.
The Crusaders stormed back in the fifth inning, scoring twice to take their first lead of the night after the two runs scored on three hits. Campbellsville's bats remained cold as it had just two hits over the first five innings, compared to six from William Carey.
David Montoya started the sixth inning with a double to the gap in left-centerfield and he scored two batters later after
Ty Housden singled home Montoya to tie the game a three all. Housden moved up to second base after the throw home, but the Tigers could not regain the lead after he was stranded on second base.
The back-and-forth game continued late after the Crusaders another run in the sixth without recording hit to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning.
Campbellsville tied the game once again in the eighth inning after Housden grounded out to second base to drive in Montoya for the second time. The Tigers then had runners on first and third with two outs, but Campbellsville could not retake the lead as it stranded eight runners through eight innings.
In the top of the ninth inning, Valdez delivered a leadoff single and after back-to-back outs he was able to move up to third base. However, he was left stranded just 90 feet away from after Lake Robertson recorded his third strikeout in as many innings out of the bullpen.
Justin Phillips kept the Crusaders at bay in the eighth and ninth inning, recording five strikeouts to send the game into extra innings.
Campbellsville left one runner on base in the top of the 10 and William Carey made the Tigers pay in the bottom half of the inning. Lucas Scott led off the inning with a double and he moved to third on a groundout. After the groundout, Scott scampered home on a wild pitch from Phillips to give the Crusaders their second extra-inning win of the day and handed the Tigers a 5-4 loss.
Hooper pitched the first 4-1/3 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits in the no decision. Phillips (0-1) was handed the loss after throwing the final 2-1/3 innings and giving up the final run of the ballgame. Phillips recorded five strikeouts against his 11 batters faced, while allowing three hits.
Hunter Speer threw the first six innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits, to go along with 11 strikeouts. Robertson (1-0) came out of the bullpen and threw the last four innings allowing just one run on two hits.
