HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Campbellsville's baseball team split its final two games during its first road trip of the season. The Tigers fell to No. 25 Webber International University, but upset No. 6 and host William Carey University.
Campbellsville (2-4) took early leads in both games, but relinquished both en route to the loss and the extra innings victory.
Webber International 4, Campbellsville 2
Campbellsville let another lead slip away as its 2-0 lead was squandered by four unanswered runs from the Warriors (4-8).
Matthew Valdez led off the game with a single and after a double from
Ty Housden, Valdez came into score after a sacrifice fly from
Logan Roberts in the first inning.
The Tigers added a run in the third inning with a two-out rally.
Tyson Solis reached on a walk and after a stolen base and an error, Solis made it 2-0 for the Tigers with out registering a hit in the inning.
Webber International got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning after Quirino Esquivel drove in Chris Medina from second base. The Warriors left to two runners stranded, but cut their deficit in half.
After two-and-half scoreless frames, Webber International tied the game in the seventh inning after back-to-back hits turned into a run for the Warriors.
Campbellsville's offense was stagnant late in the game as it only compiled three hits over the final five innings.
With the game tied at two, Webber International scored twice in the eighth inning to grab a 4-2 edge heading into the final inning. Donovan Bertoncini faced the minimum in the ninth inning to earn the save and give the Warriors a 4-2 win.
Brandon Diaz started the game and threw five innings allowing a run on six hits.
Kirby Broadbent (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs and three hits in two innings.
Juan Terron started for Webber International but earned a no decision after throwing six innings and allowing two runs – one earned. John Shutrump (2-0) earned the win after pitching a perfect inning and Bertoncini grabbed the save.
Campbellsville 4, William Carey 3 (8 innings)
The early leads continue to come for the Tigers as they jumped out on top of the Crusaders (7-2), 3-0, after four innings.
In the third inning, Campbellsville broke the scoreless affair with two runs in the inning top of the inning. After a groundout from
Connor Lowrie scored
DePaul Blunt, Valdez belted his second home run in as many days to put the Tigers ahead, 2-0.
Housden started the fourth inning with a double down the line in left field. He scored on the next pitch after
Austin Peterson singled to left field and a wild throw from the William Carey third basemen allowed Housden to score on the play.
Parker Loutensock tossed five scoreless innings and only allowed three hits and two walks, while striking out five in the no decision.
William Carey came back in the bottom of the seventh inning after a they loaded the bases and brought in a run on a wild pitch. The Crusaders loaded the bases once again with one out, and a passed ball made it a one-run game with two runners in scoring position.
Trailing by one and the bases loaded for the third time in the seventh inning, William Carey tied the game on a fielder's choice that did not register an out to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning and the scored tied at three. Marco Murrillo got out of the jam with the scored still tied.
In the eighth inning, Roberts led off the inning with his first home run of the season put the Tigers back on top 4-3 in the extra frame.
Murillo (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to seal the win for Campbellsville and snap its three-game skid. Murillo tossed 1-2/3 innings to earn the win without allowing a hit, but he did surrender a run.
Evan Cole tossed seven innings allowing three runs – one earned – on six hits. Wyatt Butler (0-1) recorded the loss after allowing the home run to Roberts.
Campbellsville returns home on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader against Huntington University starting at 12:30 p.m. ET.
