Smith's five RBI and Gailor's gem in the circle leads Lady Tigers to #OpeningDay sweep of Calumet

WESTFIELD, Ind. — Alexis Smith drove in a combined five runs in two games and Morgan Gailor pitched a one-hitter in game two to lead No. 12 Campbellsville softball to a doubleheader sweep over Calumet College of St. Joseph.

The Lady Tigers won 16-6 in game one and 11-0 in game two – both ended in run-rules for Campbellsville (2-0).

Smith finished with four hits on the day and drove in five runs. Jacqueline Roof totaled five hits – two in game one and three more in game two to lead CU. Roof also scored six runs and drove in three herself in the doubleheader.

Game one: Campbellsville 16, Calumet 6

In addition to Smith's 3-for-4 game and Roof going 2-for-3, Rebecca Miller, Brianna Scott and Ryley Whitney all tallied a pair of hits and drove in 15 of the 16 runs.

The Lady Tigers got on the board with a five-run first inning and it looked like CU would run away early but Calumet answered right back. The Crimsonwave took advantage of five Lady Tiger errors in the opening frame and scored five unearned runs off starter Neely Quint (1-0).

Calumet scored three runs in the opening inning and tied the game at five through two innings. They ended up taking a 6-5 lead through three innings after CU went 1-2-3 at the plate in the second and third frames. Quint started to find her groove and the defense calmed down the rest of the way.

Quint finished her day by allowing five hits, six runs (one earned) and struck out four.

The Lady Tigers answered in big ways in the fourth and fifth innings. The fourth inning started with 2-out 0-2 count hit-by-pitch to Ryleigh Oldham and the flood gates opened after that. Roof drove in Oldham with a single and was followed with a two-RBI base knock by Smith through the right side to lead 8-6. CU kept the pedal to floor with two outs, as Mia Aldridge doubled down the left field line scoring two more runs.

Overall, CU finished hitting 13-of-21 (.619) with runners on base and 10-of-17 (.588) with runners in scoring position.

In the fifth, Jordan Ison doubled down the line on the first pitch to leadoff the frame and the Lady Tigers tallied six more runs. Roof earned a RBI double, Rebecca Miller delivered a sacrifice fly, Scott followed with an RBI single and Whitney followed suit with an RBI base hit herself. Dana Adkins picked up her first hit of the season with an RBI single to left field to score CU's 16th run.

Game two: Campbellsville 11, Calumet 0

Gailor (1-0) allowed just one hit, a single in the second inning, and rolled the rest of the way. She finished tossing five innings, walked one and struck out four of the 16 batters she faced.

CU gave her a little breathing room in the first with two runs. Roof doubled off the left-field fence and later scored on an RBI single by Smith – her fifth RBI of the day. Smith scored a few batters later on a wild pitch by Calumet.

In the fourth, the Lady Tigers added another run and it all started with Roof leading off the frame with an extra base hit. She tripled to centerfield and was followed with an RBI double by Miller to push CU ahead, 3-0.

In the fifth, Whitney singled with one out and her pinch-runner, Kalin Bottoms, would score along with Aldridge on a Kelly Wheeler RBI single to left field.

Moving to the sixth, Tori Humphrey, the reigning MSC Freshman of the Year, delivered an inside-the-park homerun and the Lady Tigers opened the flood gates with four more hits and six runs in total.

The sixth inning went to freshman Karson Williams in the circle. A batter reached on an error – the sixth of the day for CU – but Williams worked Calumet's Payton West into a 6-4 double play by Roof to seal the doubleheader sweep.

Campbellsville will now return home to host Lawrence Tech on Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. The Lady Tigers also host Midway University on Saturday starting Noon ET.
